AHRR Hosts Inaugural Armed Forces National Conference ‘SHAPE 2025’ Focused on Sustainable Hospital Planning

The Army Hospital Research & Referral (AHRR) in New Delhi recently hosted the inaugural Armed Forces National Conference, SHAPE 2025: Sustainable Hospital Architecture, Planning, Infrastructure, and Equipment. Held on July 26-27, 2025, the event attracted over 275 professionals from both military and civilian sectors, including hospital administrators, doctors, engineers, and architects. The conference aimed to address the future of sustainable healthcare infrastructure in India, emphasizing the need for innovative and environmentally friendly hospital designs.

Collaboration for a Sustainable Future

The SHAPE 2025 conference served as a platform for collaboration among various stakeholders, including military, civil, and private sectors. Participants engaged in discussions about the evolving landscape of healthcare facilities in India, particularly as the nation approaches its centenary of independence under the Viksit Bharat@2047 initiative. The conference highlighted the importance of moving away from traditional hospital planning methods, advocating for designs that are environmentally conscious and technologically advanced. The emphasis on sustainability was recognized as essential not only for environmental benefits but also for enhancing national preparedness and ensuring health equity and patient safety.

Innovative Framework for Hospital Design

During the two-day event, experts outlined a comprehensive framework for integrating green technologies into hospital infrastructure. Key topics included the use of solar energy, rainwater harvesting, and disaster-resilient designs. The conference also focused on achieving GRIHA ratings and CFEES certification, which are crucial for promoting sustainable practices in healthcare. Additionally, the importance of ergonomically designed, healing architecture was emphasized, aiming to create spaces that promote patient well-being. This collaborative effort laid the groundwork for a robust doctrine on Sustainable Hospital Infrastructure, Architecture, Planning, and Equipment Management.

A Benchmark in Healthcare Transformation

SHAPE 2025 marks a significant milestone in the transformation of healthcare within the Armed Forces. The initiative, spearheaded by the Department of Hospital Administration at AHRR, redefines hospitals as climate-conscious and people-centric ecosystems. This shift is crucial for building a resilient and health-secure India, aligning with the national aspirations outlined in Vision 2047. By setting a benchmark for sustainable healthcare practices, the conference aims to inspire future developments in hospital infrastructure, ensuring that they meet the needs of both patients and the environment.
