Bihar Becomes First State in the Country to Achieve All Polling Stations with Less Than

Bihar has made history by becoming the first state in India to ensure that all polling stations have fewer than 1,200 electors. This significant milestone was achieved through the addition of 12,817 new polling stations, aimed at reducing long wait times for voters. The state government revised the previous limit of 1,500 electors per polling station to enhance the electoral process. With this change, the total number of polling stations in Bihar will rise to 90,712, up from 77,895, setting a precedent for other states and union territories to follow.

Enhancing Voter Accessibility

The initiative to lower the number of electors per polling station is part of Bihar’s broader strategy to improve voter accessibility and streamline the electoral process. By reducing the number of electors at each station, the state aims to minimize long queues and ensure that every voter can cast their ballot without undue delay. The decision to add more polling stations reflects a commitment to making the electoral process more efficient and user-friendly. This move is expected to encourage higher voter turnout, as citizens will find it easier to access their designated polling locations.

Collaboration with Political Parties

In preparation for upcoming elections, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) and District Election Officers (DEOs) have engaged with representatives from all major political parties. They have shared detailed lists of 29.62 lakh electors whose registration forms have not yet been received, as well as nearly 43.93 lakh electors who could not be located at their registered addresses. All twelve major political parties have been urged to assist in reaching out to these individuals through their district presidents and approximately 1.5 lakh Booth Level Agents (BLAs). This collaborative effort aims to ensure that no eligible voter is excluded from the electoral roll, which is set to be published on August 1, 2025.

Public Participation in Electoral Roll Management

Starting August 1, 2025, the public will have the opportunity to file objections regarding any additions, deletions, or corrections in the draft electoral rolls. This provision is part of the state’s initiative to enhance transparency and public involvement in the electoral process. By allowing citizens to participate actively in managing the electoral rolls, Bihar is fostering a more inclusive democracy. This step is crucial for ensuring that the electoral rolls accurately reflect the current population and that all eligible voters are accounted for.

Current Voter Statistics

As of June 24, 2025, Bihar has a total of 78,969,844 registered electors. Out of these, 71,603,218 enumeration forms have been received, representing a 90.67% completion rate. Furthermore, 70,859,670 forms have been digitized, accounting for 89.73% of the total. However, there are still 43,92,864 electors who have not been located at their registered addresses, which constitutes 5.56% of the total. The state is actively working to address these discrepancies to ensure that the electoral process is fair and comprehensive.
