Gothia Cup Victory Highlights Collaborative Strength

Smt. Raksha Nikhil Khadse, the Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, honored the Special Olympics Bharat football team in New Delhi today, celebrating their remarkable achievement as the defending champions of the Gothia Special Olympics Trophy 2025. Their victory in Gothenburg, Sweden, not only highlights the team’s exceptional skills but also aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s vision for a developed India that emphasizes inclusion and empowerment through sports. The Gothia Cup, known as “The World Youth Cup,” is the largest international youth football tournament, featuring a category for athletes with diverse cognitive abilities since 2011.

Celebrating a Historic Victory

The Special Olympics Bharat team’s journey at the Gothia Cup 2025 was marked by outstanding resilience and skill. They secured their championship title with a decisive 3-1 victory over Poland in the final match, a win that has been described as historic. This triumph follows their impressive 4-3 victory against Denmark in the previous year’s finals. To prepare for this significant international challenge, the team participated in a national camp at Manav Rachna University from July 2nd to July 11th, with full support from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The camp included 17 participants, comprising 10 players and 7 support staff, who trained rigorously to enhance their performance on the global stage.

During the ceremony, Smt. Raksha Khadse personally interacted with the athletes and coaches, praising their dedication and the impact of their achievements. She reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to creating an environment where individuals, regardless of their abilities, can reach their full potential. The Special Olympics Bharat team’s success is a collective effort, with standout performances from players like Saheer Muhammed, who scored 7 goals, and Ankush Kumar, who contributed 3 goals. Other players, including Stalin Kumar, Tarun Kumar, and Biki Duley, also made significant contributions to the team’s overall performance. Smt. Khadse highlighted that these achievements reflect India’s commitment to fostering an inclusive sporting ecosystem. She stated that the team’s consecutive victories at the Gothia Cup demonstrate determination and resilience, showcasing the limitless potential within every individual.
