Results from the Conference on Strengthening Statistical Systems

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) convened a significant conference on April 5, 2025, in New Delhi, focusing on the theme of “Strengthening Statistical Systems.” The event aimed to underscore the necessity of producing accurate and timely statistics at both national and sub-national levels. Key discussions revolved around enhancing collaboration between national and state statistical systems and addressing the needs of States and Union Territories (UTs) to bolster their statistical frameworks.
Objectives of the Conference
The conference brought together representatives from various States and UTs to discuss the critical role of statistics in socio-economic planning. One of the primary objectives was to highlight the importance of generating relevant and precise data that can inform policy decisions. The discussions emphasized the need for improved collaboration between MoSPI and state governments to ensure that statistical systems are robust and capable of meeting the demands of modern governance. Participants explored how effective data collection and analysis can lead to better-targeted policies and programs that address local needs.
Training and Support Initiatives
During the conference, MoSPI officials informed attendees about ongoing training programs and workshops designed to enhance the statistical capabilities of States and UTs. These initiatives aim to sensitize local governments about the importance of consistent data collection and the compilation of various socio-economic indicators. By aligning state-level data practices with national standards, MoSPI seeks to improve the overall quality of statistics available for policy formulation. The ministry also plays a supportive role by participating in committees established by States and UTs, assisting them in the preparation of key statistical indicators.
Innovations in Data Collection
A significant development discussed at the conference was the incorporation of district-level estimates in major National Sample Surveys (NSS). By adopting ‘district’ as the basic stratum in survey sampling design, MoSPI aims to provide more granular data that can facilitate targeted policy-making at the sub-state level. This initiative allows for the generation of annual district-level estimates of major indicators, enabling state governments to tailor their policies more effectively to local conditions and needs.
Launch of New Resources
The conference also featured the release of MoSPI’s annual publication, “Women and Men in India 2024: Selected Indicators and Data.” Additionally, the National Statistical Systems Training Academy (NSSTA) website was launched, serving as a hub for training resources. The revamped Micro-data Portal, which hosts data from over 175 socio-economic surveys, was introduced to enhance the dissemination of micro-level data. Furthermore, a semantic search tool for the National Industrial Classification Code, developed during a recent hackathon at IIT Gandhinagar, was showcased, highlighting MoSPI’s commitment to leveraging technology in statistical analysis and data accessibility.
