Reservoir Storage Monitoring System

The Central Water Commission (CWC) has been actively monitoring the live storage capacity of 161 key reservoirs across India, providing essential data through a weekly bulletin. This initiative, which began with manual data collection methods, has evolved significantly since the introduction of the Reservoir Storage Monitoring System (RSMS) in 2012. The RSMS allows project authorities to directly input data, enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of water resource management in the country.

Evolution of Data Monitoring

Before the implementation of the RSMS, the CWC relied on phone calls and fax communications to gather data from various project authorities. This manual process was time-consuming and prone to errors. The introduction of RSMS revolutionized this approach by enabling real-time data entry. Project authorities and regional offices now have unique user IDs and passwords to log into the system and submit their data directly. This streamlined process not only improves data accuracy but also facilitates quicker analysis and reporting. The CWC generates bulletins based on the data collected, which are then distributed via email to relevant Union ministries, state governments, and other stakeholders. Additionally, these bulletins are made publicly accessible on the RSMS portal, promoting transparency and informed decision-making.

Current Monitoring Status

As of now, the CWC monitors the live storage status of 161 important reservoirs, which collectively hold a capacity of 182.46 billion cubic meters (BCM). This extensive monitoring is crucial for effective water resource management, particularly in planning for irrigation, drinking water supply, and flood control. The data provided through the RSMS supports better preparedness for drought conditions, ensuring that stakeholders can make informed decisions based on the latest information. The CWC’s commitment to maintaining this system reflects its dedication to enhancing water management practices across the nation.

Cost-Effective Development

The RSMS portal was developed in-house by the CWC, which has not allocated a separate budget for its development or maintenance since its inception. This cost-effective approach demonstrates the CWC’s ability to innovate and improve its operations without incurring additional expenses. By utilizing existing resources, the CWC has successfully implemented a system that benefits both the government and the public. The RSMS has become an essential tool for monitoring water resources, ensuring that critical information is readily available to those who need it.
