NHRC to Conduct Camp Sitting in Bhubaneswar on July 21-22, 2025

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India is set to conduct a two-day Camp Sitting in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, on July 21 and 22, 2025. This initiative aims to address various cases of alleged human rights violations, with NHRC Chairperson Justice V. Ramasubramanian leading the proceedings. The event will not only focus on hearing cases but also on raising awareness about human rights issues among officials and engaging with civil society representatives.

Details of the Camp Sitting

The NHRC’s Camp Sitting will take place at the State Guest House in Keshari Nagar, starting at 10:00 AM on July 21. Alongside Justice Ramasubramanian, other members including Justice (Dr.) Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi, Smt. Vijaya Bharathi Sayani, and Shri Priyank Kanoongo will participate in the hearings. Senior NHRC officials, including Secretary General Shri Bharat Lal and Registrar (Law) Shri Joginder Singh, will also be present. The primary goal of this initiative is to provide swift justice to victims of human rights violations while educating officials about their responsibilities in upholding these rights.

Cases to be Addressed

The Camp Sitting will cover a range of serious issues, including attacks on journalists and human rights defenders, crimes against women and children, and the impact of natural disasters such as flooding in coastal districts. Specific cases include the lack of medical support leading to deaths from snake bites and human rights violations stemming from witchcraft accusations. The NHRC has requested the presence of state authorities and complainants to facilitate immediate discussions and resolutions during the hearings.

Engagement with Civil Society

On July 22, the NHRC will engage with representatives from civil society organizations, NGOs, and human rights defenders. This interaction aims to foster collaboration and gather insights on pressing human rights issues in the state. Following these discussions, a media briefing will be held to share the outcomes of the Camp Sitting, ensuring that information regarding human rights concerns and NHRC actions reaches a broader audience.

NHRC’s Ongoing Commitment

Since 2007, the NHRC has been actively conducting camp sittings across various states in India, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Karnataka, among others. These initiatives reflect the Commission’s commitment to addressing human rights violations at the grassroots level and promoting awareness among officials and the public. The upcoming Camp Sitting in Odisha continues this tradition, aiming to enhance the protection and promotion of human rights throughout the region.
