DPE Secretary Inaugurates Workshop on Industry 4.0 Adoption in CPSEs

In a significant move to enhance innovation and smart manufacturing, the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) under the Ministry of Finance, Government of India, hosted a workshop on Industry 4.0 in New Delhi. The event, which took place yesterday, gathered experts, policymakers, and leaders from Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) to explore strategies for implementing and scaling Industry 4.0 technologies across various sectors, including energy, power, construction, and telecommunications. The workshop aimed to foster collaboration and integration of advanced technologies to boost competitiveness in the global market.

Inauguration and Keynote Address

The workshop commenced with an inaugural address by Shri K. Moses Chalai, Secretary of the Department of Public Enterprises. He emphasized the critical need for India to embrace the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) as a national mission. Chalai introduced the concept of a โ€œWhole-of-CPSEsโ€ approach, akin to the โ€œWhole-of-Governmentโ€ framework, urging all CPSEs to work together in adopting 4IR technologies. He highlighted the importance of integrating tools such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), Digital Twins, 3D Printing, and 5G-enabled smart infrastructure into their operations. Chalai also mentioned that the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies would be considered in future assessments of CPSE Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), stressing that early adoption is essential for enhancing global competitiveness.

Expert Presentations and Insights

The workshop featured a series of expert presentations that provided valuable insights into the applications of Industry 4.0 technologies. Mr. A. Anand, a deployment expert, shared his extensive experience in digital design, reverse engineering, and 3D printing, drawing from India’s pioneering 5G Labs and 3D Printing Centres of Excellence. Dr. Prabhjot Singh Sugga, an Associate Professor at the School of Planning and Architecture, discussed the transformative potential of Digital Twin platforms in managing infrastructure and enhancing disaster resilience. Additionally, Ms. Vidushi Chaturvedi, an AI expert, addressed the role of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in predictive analytics, resource optimization, and intelligent decision-making.

Experience Sharing and Collaborative Discussions

The workshop also included experience-sharing sessions from various CPSEs, such as Powergrid, HSCC, and BSNL, which showcased successful pilot projects in AI-driven maintenance, digital simulation, and 3D printing-enabled supply chains. Key executives, including CMDs and Directors from leading CPSEs like NTPC, NHPC, GAIL, and IRCTC, participated in interactive discussions. These discussions focused on strategic roadmaps, capacity building, and the sector-specific adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies. The deliberations reaffirmed the relevance of 4IR technologies across critical sectors, including Oil & Gas, Railways, Mining, and Health, as outlined in the DPE’s Concept Paper and Adoption Potential Matrix shared during the event.

Commitment to Future Workshops

The DPE reiterated its commitment to supporting CPSEs in leveraging Industry 4.0 for operational excellence and sustainable development. The workshop represents a crucial step toward achieving this vision through collaborative efforts and strategic implementation within the CPSE ecosystem. The DPE plans to organize additional workshops across various regions of the country, targeting CPSEs located in those areas. This initiative is expected to be completed by August 2025, further promoting the adoption of advanced technologies in India’s public sector enterprises.
