India Unveils AMP 2047: A Strategic Automotive Mission Plan for Future Growth

The Indian government has embarked on an ambitious initiative to shape the future of its automotive sector through the Automotive Mission Plan 2047 (AMP 2047). This strategic roadmap aims to position India as a global leader in the automotive industry, emphasizing innovation, sustainability, and a significant increase in the nationโ€™s share of global automotive trade. The Ministry of Heavy Industries announced the formation of seven expert sub-committees to define the plan’s objectives and targets, marking a significant step towards realizing the vision of a developed India by 2047.

Collaboration Across Sectors

The AMP 2047 initiative is spearheaded by the Ministry of Heavy Industries, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H D Kumaraswamy. This comprehensive plan involves collaboration among various government ministries, including those responsible for power, road transport, commerce, petroleum, and the environment. Additionally, industry bodies such as the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association (ACMA), and several academic institutions and research think tanks are actively participating in the development process. The inaugural meeting of the AMP 2047 sub-committees has already taken place, where members outlined the framework and objectives of the plan, focusing on enhancing India’s global standing in the automotive sector.

Strategic Goals and Milestones

The AMP 2047 is designed with specific milestones set for 2030, 2037, and 2047. These milestones aim to tackle critical challenges facing the automotive industry, including technological advancements, the transition to electric mobility, and the establishment of robust charging infrastructure. Hanif Qureshi, the additional secretary in the Ministry of Heavy Industries, emphasized that the vision for 2047 is not merely aspirational but is backed by concrete targets for growth, exports, and industry advancement. The plan seeks to elevate India’s position in global automotive trade through a focus on innovation and quality.

Building on Previous Successes

AMP 2047 builds upon the foundations laid by the previous Automotive Mission Plan 2016โ€“2026 (AMP 2026). The earlier plan aimed to position India among the top three global players in the engineering, manufacturing, and export of vehicles and components. It also targeted increasing the automotive sector’s contribution to over 12 percent of Indiaโ€™s GDP and creating 65 million additional jobs. The new plan seeks to expand on these achievements, ensuring that India not only keeps pace with global developments but also leads in the automotive sector by 2047.
