Threads Launches Direct Messages Featuring Enhanced Controls and Inbox Filters

Threads has officially launched direct messaging (DM) capabilities, enabling users to engage in one-on-one conversations without leaving the app. This highly anticipated feature, described by Instagram head Adam Mosseri as a โ€œtop requestโ€ since Threads debuted in 2023, introduces various options such as messaging controls, inbox filtering, and group messaging. Additionally, the Meta-owned platform has unveiled Threads Highlighter, a new feature designed to spotlight trending topics.

Sending DMs on Threads

Since its launch in 2023, Threads has positioned itself as a microblogging alternative to X, formerly known as Twitter, particularly following Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform. Until now, Threads lacked direct messaging capabilities, but that has changed. According to a recent blog post from Meta, one-on-one messaging is now available, albeit with certain limitations. The company began testing this feature last month, and it has since been rolled out to a broader audience.

Initially, DMs can be exchanged between Threads followers or mutual Instagram users who are 18 years and older. These messages adhere to Meta’s privacy standards and account protection measures, ensuring a secure communication environment. The company plans to enhance the DMs feature further, starting with the introduction of message controls, which will allow users to manage who can send them messages. Users will have the option to receive DMs from individuals who do not follow them on either Threads or Instagram, with these requests directed to a separate message requests folder. Additionally, group messaging will enable multiple Threads users to participate in a conversation simultaneously.

Enhanced Messaging Features

The new messaging capabilities on Threads come with several enhancements aimed at improving user experience. One notable feature is the inbox filtering option, which allows users to apply specific parameters to their inbox. This functionality will help users locate particular messages more efficiently, streamlining their communication on the platform.

The DMs will be accessible through an envelope icon located in the bottom tray of the app. The user interface for DMs is designed to be similar to that of Instagram, making it familiar for users who already engage with both platforms. This consistency in design is expected to facilitate a smoother transition for users as they adapt to the new messaging features.

Introducing Threads Highlighter

In addition to direct messaging, Threads is launching a new feature called Threads Highlighter. This tool aims to showcase unique perspectives that foster meaningful conversations among users. The Highlighter will be prominently displayed in key areas of the app, assisting users in discovering engaging content.

Moreover, Threads Highlighter will also be used to identify trending topics, making it easier for users to stay informed about popular discussions. Meta has indicated that the placement of this feature will be expanded in the near future, further enhancing the app’s functionality and user engagement.

As Threads continues to evolve, the introduction of direct messaging and the Threads Highlighter feature marks a significant step in enhancing user interaction and content discovery on the platform.
