Gemini Live Launches Real-Time Captions Feature

Gemini Live, the innovative chatbot from Google, is enhancing user interaction with the introduction of a real-time captions feature on both Android and iOS platforms. This new functionality allows users to engage in two-way conversations with the AI without needing to hear its voice, making it particularly useful in noisy environments or when hands-free communication is preferred. Users can also customize the appearance of the captions, adjusting font size and style to suit their preferences.

Real-Time Captions Enhance User Experience

Earlier this month, reports emerged from various users who noticed the new captions feature in Gemini Live, suggesting that Google was conducting tests with a limited audience. Now, it appears that the Mountain View tech giant is rolling out this feature globally, making it accessible to all users. The feature is represented by a square icon located in the top-right corner of the Gemini Live interface, allowing for easy access.

Gadgets 360 confirmed that the real-time captions feature is operational on both Android and iOS devices, functioning identically across platforms. Users can activate or deactivate the captions by tapping the square icon once Gemini Live is initiated. Interestingly, if the device’s volume is muted, Gemini Live prompts users to enable captions automatically, a significant improvement from the previous requirement of having the volume audible for the chatbot to function.

How Captions Function During Conversations

When activated, the real-time captions appear at the bottom of the screen in two lines, displaying only the current dialogue from Gemini. Users seeking to review the entire conversation must conclude the session to access the full transcript. The captions also remain functional during screen sharing or live video features, with the text appearing at the top of the screen in video mode, ensuring that users can follow along seamlessly.

This enhancement not only improves accessibility but also caters to users who may be in environments where sound is not an option. The ability to read what Gemini is saying allows for a more inclusive experience, particularly for those who are hearing impaired or prefer visual communication.

Customization Options for Android Users

Android users benefit from additional customization options for the captions. A new setting labeled “Caption preferences” allows users to modify various aspects of the captions, including language, text size, and style. This feature provides users with the flexibility to choose how the captions are displayed, including options for text color, background color, and opacity.

The customization options extend beyond basic settings, allowing users to select specific font styles and adjust the overall appearance to their liking. However, it is important to note that these customization features are currently unavailable for iOS users, who will have to rely on the standard caption settings.

Overall, the introduction of real-time captions in Gemini Live marks a significant step forward in enhancing user interaction with AI technology, making conversations more accessible and user-friendly across different environments.
