Cabinet Approves Phase-2 of Pune Metro Rail Project from Vanaz to Chandani Chowk

The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light to the Pune Metro Rail Project Phase-2, which includes two significant corridors: Vanaz to Chandani Chowk (Corridor 2A) and Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi (Corridor 2B). This expansion will add 12.75 kilometers of elevated rail and 13 stations, enhancing connectivity in rapidly developing suburbs. With an estimated cost of โ‚น3,626.24 crore, the project aims for completion within four years and is designed to improve public transport accessibility across Pune.

Project Overview and Funding

The Pune Metro Rail Project Phase-2 will extend the existing Vanaz-Ramwadi corridor, creating a vital link for commuters in the region. The total estimated cost of the project is โ‚น3,626.24 crore, which will be financed equally by the Government of India, the Government of Maharashtra, and various external bilateral and multilateral agencies. This initiative is part of a broader strategy outlined in the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), which aims to establish a continuous metro corridor from Chandani Chowk to Wagholi. This extension is expected to significantly enhance mass transit options in Pune, catering to the needs of its growing population.

Enhanced Connectivity and Accessibility

The new metro corridors will serve key areas, including IT hubs, commercial districts, educational institutions, and residential neighborhoods. By increasing the share of public transport, the project aims to boost ridership across the metro network. The corridors will also feature an interchange station at the District Court, connecting with Line-1 (Nigdiโ€“Katraj) and Line-3 (Hinjewadiโ€“District Court). This integration will facilitate seamless multimodal travel, making it easier for passengers to navigate the urban landscape of Pune.

Long-term Mobility Planning

In addition to improving local transit, the project includes plans for integrating intercity bus services. Buses from cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru will connect at Chandani Chowk, while services from Ahilya Nagar and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar will link to Wagholi. This connectivity will allow passengers to access Puneโ€™s metro system conveniently. Furthermore, the new corridors are expected to alleviate congestion on major routes such as Paud Road and Nagar Road, providing safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly transportation options.

Projected Impact and Implementation

Upon completion, the new corridors are projected to significantly increase daily ridership. Estimates suggest that by 2027, the ridership for the entire Line 2 could reach 96,000, growing to 349,000 by 2057. The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) will oversee the implementation of the project, including all civil and electro-mechanical works. Pre-construction activities, such as topographical surveys and detailed design consultancy, have already begun. This strategic expansion is set to unlock Puneโ€™s economic potential and enhance its urban transport infrastructure, contributing to sustainable development in the metropolitan area.
