Ramiz Alakbarov Appointed Deputy Special Representative

United Nations Secretary-General Antรณnio Guterres has appointed Ramiz Alakbarov from Azerbaijan as the new Deputy Special Coordinator and Resident Coordinator for the Office of the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process. In addition to this role, Dr. Alakbarov will also serve as the Humanitarian Coordinator. He takes over from Muhannad Hadi of Jordan, who has been recognized for his dedicated service. The Secretary-General also expressed gratitude to Sarah Poole from the United States for her interim support during this transition.
Background of Dr. Alakbarov
Dr. Ramiz Alakbarov brings over 30 years of international experience to his new role, with a strong background in executive leadership, strategic planning, and humanitarian response. Since 2023, he has been serving as the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Ethiopia. Before this, he held the position of Deputy Special Representative for Afghanistan with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) from 2021 to 2023. During his tenure in Afghanistan, he also acted as the UN Resident Coordinator on an interim basis in 2020.
His extensive career within the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) includes roles such as Deputy Executive Director for Management and United Nations Reforms (ad interim) and Director of the Policy and Strategy Division in New York. He has also served as Country Representative in Haiti, Deputy Regional Director for the Arab States in Cairo, and Head of the Office in South Sudan. His work has spanned various regions, including the Arab States, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia, where he has held positions that supported humanitarian efforts and country programs.
Educational Qualifications
Dr. Alakbarov holds both MD and PhD degrees in internal medicine from Azerbaijan Medical University. He also earned a Master of Arts in international relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts. His diverse educational background complements his extensive professional experience. Additionally, Dr. Alakbarov is fluent in several languages, including Azerbaijani, English, French, Russian, and Turkish, which will aid him in his new role within the United Nations.
