Launch of Depot Darpan Portal and Mobile Application for Food Storage Depots

The Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) in India is set to enhance food security for over 800 million beneficiaries through innovative warehousing solutions. The upcoming Depot Darpan portal and mobile application aims to ensure that food storage depots adhere to the highest quality and performance standards. This initiative will empower depot managers to monitor infrastructure and operational efficiency in real-time, ultimately improving the management of food grains across the nation.
Introduction of Depot Darpan
The Depot Darpan initiative represents a significant advancement in the management of food storage facilities. By integrating a digital platform with smart warehousing technologies, the DFPD aims to create a comprehensive monitoring system for food grain depots. Depot managers will be able to upload geo-tagged data regarding their facilities, which will generate automated ratings and actionable insights for necessary improvements. This system ensures that all data is validated by supervisory officers and subjected to random third-party audits, thereby enhancing accountability and transparency in food storage operations.
Assessment Criteria for Warehouses
Warehouses will be evaluated based on two primary categories: infrastructural and operational efficiency. The infrastructural assessment focuses on safety standards, storage conditions, environmental compliance, technology adoption, and adherence to statutory requirements. Meanwhile, the operational efficiency evaluation considers factors such as stock turnover, losses, space utilization, manpower expenses, and profitability. Each category is assessed independently, and warehouses will receive a star rating based on their overall performance in both areas. This dual approach ensures a comprehensive evaluation of each depot’s capabilities and effectiveness.
Integration of Smart Technologies
Depot Darpan is designed to incorporate advanced technologies that enhance the monitoring and security of food storage facilities. The system includes CCTV surveillance and IoT sensors that track critical parameters such as carbon dioxide and phosphine levels, humidity, temperature, and unauthorized access. These technologies provide real-time data, allowing for prompt responses to potential issues. Additionally, various sensors monitor ambient conditions, detect gas levels, and ensure safety during fumigation processes. The initiative also explores the use of AI for bag counting, automatic number plate recognition for vehicle tracking, and facial recognition for access control, further bolstering security measures in warehouses.
Future Prospects and Launch Date
The Depot Darpan initiative plans to onboard approximately 2,278 warehouses, including those operated by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and the Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC), as well as facilities managed by state agencies and private entities. The mobile application will allow supervisory officials to monitor warehouse performance from anywhere, facilitating better decision-making and continuous improvement. The formal inauguration of the Depot Darpan portal and mobile application is scheduled for May 20, 2025, by the Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing food security through scientifically managed storage solutions.
