Elden Ring Achieves 30 Million Copies Sold in Three Years

Elden Ring, the acclaimed action-RPG released in 2022, has achieved a remarkable sales milestone, surpassing 30 million copies sold, according to an announcement from developer FromSoftware. This impressive figure comes just over three years after the game’s launch, highlighting its enduring popularity among players. As the highest-selling title from the Japanese studio, Elden Ring continues to captivate audiences, while FromSoftware is also developing a spinoff game titled Elden Ring Nightreign.
Elden Ring Sales Milestone
FromSoftware confirmed the significant sales achievement of Elden Ring in a post on X, expressing gratitude to players for their ongoing support. The official Elden Ring account stated, โDearest Tarnished, we are profoundly thankful for your lasting devotion. May your path be forever guided by the Grace of Gold.โ The game reached the 30 million sales mark in just over three years since its debut in February 2022. Notably, the last five million units were sold within the past ten months, indicating that the action-RPG remains popular even years after its initial release. Previously, Elden Ring had reached 25 million units sold in June 2024, just days before the launch of its first major expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree.
The expansion introduced new story content, an additional map area, new enemies, and challenging boss fights, receiving widespread acclaim upon its release. It was recognized as the highest-rated expansion ever on Metacritic. Despite some controversy, Shadow of the Erdtree was nominated for the prestigious Game of the Year award at The Game Awards 2024, although it ultimately lost to Astro Bot. The expansion quickly gained traction, selling five million copies worldwide within just three days of its release.
Elden Ring’s Financial Success
Elden Ring stands out as the most profitable franchise for FromSoftware, significantly outpacing previous titles such as Dark Souls 3 and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, both of which sold over 10 million units. In fact, Elden Ring has now surpassed the total sales of the entire Dark Souls franchise, which has collectively shipped over 27 million copies across its three games. This remarkable success underscores the game’s impact on the gaming industry and its strong fanbase.
Despite the game’s success, FromSoftware has no immediate plans for a sequel to Elden Ring. Hidetaka Miyazaki, the studio president and director of Elden Ring, stated in December 2024 that the focus is on other projects. He clarified, โWe don’t have any particular plans for Elden Ring 2,โ during the PlayStation Partner Awards 2024 Japan Asia event. However, Miyazaki did leave the possibility open for future developments within the Elden Ring intellectual property, indicating that the studio is not ruling out further exploration of the franchise.
Upcoming Spinoff: Elden Ring Nightreign
In a recent announcement, FromSoftware revealed the development of Elden Ring Nightreign, a spinoff multiplayer co-op action survival game. This new title is set to launch on May 30 across multiple platforms, including PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X. The announcement was made during The Game Awards 2025, generating excitement among fans eager for new experiences within the Elden Ring universe.
Elden Ring Nightreign aims to expand the franchise’s reach by offering a different gameplay experience while retaining the core elements that fans love. As anticipation builds for the spinoff, it remains to be seen how it will be received by the gaming community. With the continued success of Elden Ring and the introduction of new titles, FromSoftware is poised to maintain its strong presence in the gaming industry for years to come.
