AR Rahman Defends Music Approach Amid Criticism

Music legend AR Rahman has responded to recent accusations from playback singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya, who criticized the composer for favoring technology over traditional musicians. In an interview with India Today, Rahman clarified his stance, emphasizing that while he embraces digital tools, he remains committed to supporting live musicians and their artistry.

Rahman’s Response to Criticism

Abhijeet Bhattacharya’s comments suggested that AR Rahman’s reliance on technology has diminished opportunities for traditional musicians. In his response, Rahman acknowledged the use of technology in his work but insisted it does not compromise the authenticity of musicianship. “It’s easy to blame me for everything. I still love Abhijeet, and I would send cakes to him. It’s his opinion, and there’s nothing wrong with having one,” Rahman stated, maintaining a calm demeanor throughout the discussion.

Rahman further elaborated on his commitment to musicians, highlighting his recent initiative to establish an orchestra of 60 women in Dubai. He noted that these musicians are employed monthly and receive comprehensive benefits, including health insurance. “In every movie I work on, such as Chhaava or Ponniyin Selvan, I involve around 200-300 musicians, with some songs featuring over 100 contributors. I donโ€™t showcase these efforts publicly, which is why they often go unnoticed,” he explained.

Balancing Technology and Live Music

Despite the integration of technology in his creative process, Rahman emphasized the importance of live music in his compositions. He stated, “The more you refine music, the more you appreciate live performances. Computers are merely tools to create extraordinary harmonies. We cannot afford to hire musicians only to reject them later; all final recordings are done live.” This approach underscores his belief that technology should enhance rather than replace the artistry of musicians.

Rahman dismissed the idea that technology undermines talent, asserting that his goal has always been to merge the best aspects of both worlds while remaining cost-effective. “Producers Iโ€™ve worked with can attest to the number of musicians I engage,” he added, reinforcing his commitment to supporting the music community.

Looking Ahead

As the conversation around technology in music continues, AR Rahman’s dedication to fostering a vibrant musical landscape remains evident. His efforts to employ and support musicians highlight a commitment to preserving the essence of live music while embracing modern tools. As the industry evolves, Rahman’s perspective serves as a reminder of the importance of balancing innovation with tradition.
