OpenAI Launches Image Generation for All Users

OpenAI has made its innovative image-generation feature available to all ChatGPT users, including those on the free tier. Initially rolled out to paid subscribers last month, the feature now allows free users limited access, with a cap on daily image generations. This move aims to enhance user experience while incorporating safeguards against deepfakes through metadata tagging.

OpenAI Expands GPT-4o Image Generation to Free Users

On Tuesday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced via X (formerly Twitter) that the GPT-4o-powered image generation feature is now accessible to free-tier users of ChatGPT. To utilize this feature, users must be logged into their OpenAI accounts. The free tier currently allows for three image generations per day, with a cooldown period between consecutive requests to manage server load.

Altman also shared impressive statistics, revealing that one million new users registered on ChatGPT within just one hour on Monday. This surge in registrations is particularly notable when compared to the platform’s previous record of one million users gained over five days during its launch in 2022.

The excitement surrounding the new image generation feature can be attributed to a viral trend where users transform their photos into the distinctive art style of Studio Ghibli, the renowned Japanese animation studio behind beloved films like Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro. Social media has been abuzz with users sharing their Ghibli-style creations, further driving interest in the feature.

Temporary Rate Limits Implemented Amid High Demand

The overwhelming popularity of the image generation feature prompted OpenAI to impose temporary rate limits on paid ChatGPT users. Altman humorously noted that the decision was made because โ€œour GPUs are melting,โ€ highlighting the intense demand for the service. This proactive measure aims to ensure that all users can access the feature without significant delays.

In a separate discussion, Altman criticized Meta for imposing restrictions on the use of its open-source Llama models for companies with over 700 million monthly active users. He emphasized OpenAI’s commitment to keeping its models accessible, stating, โ€œWe will not do anything silly like saying that you can’t use our open model if your service has more than 700 million monthly active users.โ€

Enhanced Features and Safety Measures

The newly launched image generation feature in ChatGPT includes improved text rendering and a prompt-based inline editing capability. Users can upload their images and request transformations into various artistic styles or make specific edits. OpenAI has also implemented strict safety measures, blocking requests for images that contain harmful content, such as child sexual abuse material, sexual deepfakes, or violent imagery.
