ICAR Hosts 63rd Convocation Celebrating Agricultural Innovation

The Indian Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR) in New Delhi held its 63rd Convocation today, showcasing the remarkable research achievements of its postgraduate students. The event featured presentations from students across various disciplines, including Agricultural Engineering, Biochemistry, and Plant Pathology, as they competed for the prestigious IARI Merit Medals and the Best Student of the Year Award. The convocation highlighted significant advancements in agricultural sciences, addressing critical issues such as climate change and sustainable farming practices.

Showcasing Groundbreaking Research

During the convocation, selected postgraduate students presented their research findings, which spanned a wide range of topics relevant to modern agriculture. Key presentations included studies on glyphosate residues in the National Capital Region’s water sources and their interaction with soil. Another notable research project focused on gender-based analysis of paddy farmers in Odisha, examining varietal adoption and trait preferences in stress-prone districts. Additionally, students showcased innovative solutions such as drone-based water stress monitoring in wheat crops and the development of glucose nanosensors for predicting glycemic responses.

Other significant research areas included the exploration of biocontrol agents in diverse agroclimatic zones of India and the characterization of viruses affecting tomato plants. The breadth of topics presented underscores the students’ commitment to addressing pressing agricultural challenges through scientific inquiry and technological advancements. The quality of research was praised by the jury, who encouraged students to continue generating impactful information for the agricultural sector.

Distinguished Guests and Jury Recognition

The convocation session was chaired by Dr. B.M. Prasanna, a distinguished scientist from CIMMYT and Regional Director for CIMMYT-Asia. He was joined by an esteemed panel of jury members, including Dr. J.P. Sharma, former Vice Chancellor of SKUAST-J, and Dr. R.K. Jain, former Dean at ICAR-IARI. Their presence added significant value to the event, as they provided insights and feedback on the students’ research presentations.

Dr. Anil Dahuja, a professor in the Division of Biochemistry, served as the session’s convener, with Dr. Atul Kumar, Associate Dean (PG) at ICAR-IARI, acting as co-convener. The jury members commended the high caliber of research conducted by the students, emphasizing the importance of their contributions to the advancement of agricultural sciences.

Encouraging Future Innovations

The 63rd Convocation of ICAR not only celebrated the achievements of its postgraduate students but also served as a platform for fostering future innovations in agriculture. The presentations highlighted the critical role of research in addressing global challenges such as food security, climate change, and sustainable farming practices. As the students prepare to embark on their professional journeys, the insights gained from this event will undoubtedly influence their future contributions to the agricultural sector.

With a strong emphasis on research and development, ICAR continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of agriculture in India and beyond.
