India’s Minister to Lead Women’s Empowerment Efforts at UN

A delegation from the Government of India, headed by Smt. Annpurna Devi, Union Minister for Women and Child Development, is set to participate in the 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Scheduled from March 10 to March 21, 2025, this session marks a significant milestone, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a pivotal document in the global movement for women’s rights.

Highlighting India’s Initiatives for Women and Girls

During the session, Union Minister Annpurna Devi will deliver a National Statement that underscores India’s transformative initiatives aimed at empowering women and girls. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government has launched various programs focusing on health, education, entrepreneurship, and digital inclusion. These initiatives are designed to promote women’s leadership and decision-making while reducing their burdens through innovative solutions.

Minister Devi will also engage in discussions surrounding the empowerment of women and girls, emphasizing the importance of resource commitment for the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This engagement aims to accelerate progress toward gender equality and the full realization of women’s rights globally.

Significance of the 69th CSW Session

The upcoming session of the CSW is particularly significant as it will review the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and assess global progress and challenges in achieving gender equality. The session will provide a platform for member states, inter-governmental organizations, and civil society to collaborate on strategies that further the empowerment of women and girls.

This yearโ€™s discussions will focus on the challenges faced in realizing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, ensuring that gender equality remains a priority on the global agenda. The participation of diverse stakeholders, including private sector representatives and women’s collectives, will enrich the dialogue and foster collaborative solutions.

High-Level Events and Engagements

As part of her visit, Minister Devi will serve as the guest of honor at a high-level side event titled โ€œMinisterial Roundtable on Digital and Financial Inclusion โ€“ A Catalyst for Womenโ€™s Empowerment and Leadership.โ€ This event, organized by the Government of India in collaboration with UN Women, will take place on March 12, 2025, and will gather ministers and senior officials from various countries to share experiences and insights on empowering women through digital and financial inclusion.

Additionally, the Union Minister will engage with the Indian diaspora during her visit, coinciding with International Womenโ€™s Day. This interactive session aims to strengthen ties with the Indian community abroad and highlight the importance of women’s empowerment initiatives in India and globally.

The 69th session of the CSW promises to be a landmark event, bringing together a wide array of participants committed to advancing gender equality and women’s rights worldwide.
