India Celebrates Lineman Diwas to Honor Power Heroes

The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) and Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd (Tata Power-DDL) hosted the Fifth Edition of ‘Lineman Diwas’ in New Delhi, recognizing the crucial role of linemen in India’s power sector. Over 180 linemen from more than 45 power companies gathered to share experiences and discuss best practices for maintaining uninterrupted electricity supply. The event highlighted the dedication and safety of these frontline workers, coinciding with National Safety Week.
Celebrating the Unsung Heroes of Power
On this special occasion, Shri Manohar Lal, the Honโble Minister of Power, delivered a video message emphasizing the importance of reliable electricity access for industries and communities. He referred to linemen as “unsung heroes” who work tirelessly to ensure uninterrupted power supply, often facing challenges from adverse weather and disasters. The minister noted that Lineman Diwas, celebrated on March 4th, not only honors their dedication but also promotes safety and innovation within the energy sector. His message underscored the significance of linemen’s safety and well-being, especially during National Safety Week.
The theme for this year’s celebration, โSeva, Suraksha, Swabhimanโ (Service, Safety, Pride), encapsulated the dedication and sacrifice of these frontline workers. Shri Ghanshyam Prasad, Chairperson of the CEA, launched a special anthem to honor linemen and highlighted the importance of Hotline Maintenance Training. This specialized training equips linemen with the skills needed to work safely on live electrical lines, ensuring both their safety and the reliability of the power grid.
Acknowledging Excellence in Safety Standards
During the event, four Distribution Companies (DISCOMs) and five linemen were recognized for their exemplary adherence to safety standards. Mr. Gajanan S. Kale, CEO of Tata Power-DDL, praised Lineman Diwas as a platform to amplify the voices of frontline workers, allowing them to share their challenges and contributions. He reiterated the commitment to ensuring their safety and well-being, urging more stakeholders to participate in this celebration of dedication and service.
Dr. Tripta Thakur, Director General of the National Power Training Institute (NPTI), also addressed the audience, stressing the importance of adopting safety practices and regular training for frontline workers. She commended the CEA for its efforts in creating and enforcing safety regulations, which play a crucial role in minimizing electrical accidents and ensuring a safer working environment.
Promoting Collaboration and Best Practices
The event featured safety videos showcasing best practices and was live-streamed to power utilities across the country, allowing broader participation. Linemen from various states seized the opportunity to exchange safety protocols and collaborate with industry stakeholders. They also visited the Distribution Operations & Safety Excellence Center (DOSEC), which provides training based on the CEA’s curriculum for operational staff. A special display of safety equipment and tools was arranged, enabling frontline workers to learn about best practices in the industry.
This collaborative effort empowered linemen to gain insights from their peers, broaden their perspectives, and reinforce effective safety protocols, promoting a safer working environment for all. The Lineman Diwas, first organized in 2021, has grown into a significant event that honors the selfless service of linemen, expanding its reach and impact with each passing year.
Participating companies included major players like Adani Electricity, BSES, and Tata Power, among others, showcasing the extensive involvement of the power sector in this initiative. The event not only celebrated the contributions of linemen but also fostered a culture of safety and collaboration within the industry.
