Asia-Pacific Forum on Circular Economy Kicks Off in Jaipur

The 12th Regional 3R and Circular Economy Forum in Asia and the Pacific commenced today in Jaipur, India, with prominent leaders from various nations in attendance. Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Shri Manohar Lal, along with Rajasthan Chief Minister Shri Bhajanlal Sharma, welcomed delegates from countries including the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, and the Maldives. Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed a message emphasizing India’s commitment to sustainable practices and the principles of a circular economy.
Prime Minister Modi’s Vision for Sustainability
During the inaugural session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a written message highlighting India’s proactive stance on environmental sustainability. He underscored the P-3 (Pro Planet People) approach, which advocates for a collaborative effort towards a circular economy. Modi’s message emphasized the importance of the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) principles in promoting sustainable urban development and resource efficiency. He also reiterated India’s leadership role in global sustainability initiatives, including Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) and the Panchamrit Goals established at COP26, which aim for net-zero emissions by 2070.
Inaugural Address by Union Minister Manohar Lal
Union Minister Manohar Lal inaugurated the forum, expressing pride in hosting the event in Jaipur, a city known for its sustainable practices such as rainwater harvesting. He acknowledged the contributions of various state leaders and emphasized the significance of the forum in fostering international collaboration. Manohar Lal announced the formation of the Cities Coalition for Circularity (C-3), aimed at enhancing city-to-city partnerships and knowledge sharing. He stated that this initiative would serve as a catalyst for resource efficiency and a low-carbon economy, reinforcing the need for modernizing traditional sustainable practices through technological advancements.
Launch of the 3R India Pavilion and Key Initiatives
As part of the forum, the 3R India Pavilion was inaugurated, showcasing innovative waste management solutions from over 40 businesses and startups from India and Japan. This exhibition serves as a platform for industry leaders to explore advancements in resource efficiency and recycling. Additionally, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for CITIIS 2.0 was signed, marking a significant step in urban sustainability efforts. This initiative will facilitate integrated waste management and climate action, with agreements worth โน1,800 crores benefiting 18 cities across 14 states.
Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma emphasized the necessity of a circular economy in addressing pressing issues like climate change and pollution. He highlighted the Rajasthan government’s commitment to sustainability through the establishment of an Environmental Management Cell to enhance waste management practices. The forum will continue over the next few days, featuring expert discussions and collaborative initiatives aimed at shaping the future of sustainable urban development.
