NHAI Cracks Down on False FASTag Deductions

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has launched a robust initiative to address the issue of erroneous FASTag toll deductions, penalizing toll operators in around 250 cases. Many FASTag users have reported receiving toll deduction notifications even when their vehicles are parked or have not passed through toll plazas. This crackdown aims to rectify these discrepancies and restore user confidence in the electronic toll collection system.

Tackling Erroneous Deductions

The NHAI’s recent actions stem from a growing number of complaints regarding incorrect toll deductions linked to FASTag accounts. Users have expressed frustration over receiving notifications for deductions that do not correspond to their actual travel. The primary cause of these errors has been identified as incorrect vehicle number entries by toll operators, particularly during manual transactions when FASTags become unreadable or when tags are improperly stored in wallets.

To combat this issue, the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), responsible for toll management, has instituted a fine of โ‚น1 lakh for each violation. This significant penalty has reportedly led to a 70% decrease in false deduction incidents. Currently, IHMCL processes approximately 30 crore FASTag transactions monthly, with only about 50 legitimate complaints being filed.

User Support and Complaint Resolution

In response to the growing concerns, IHMCL has established a streamlined process for users to report false deductions. Customers can file complaints by calling 1033 or emailing falsededuction@ihmcl.com. Each complaint is thoroughly investigated, and if a false deduction is confirmed, the affected user receives an immediate chargeback. Furthermore, the toll operator responsible for the error faces the imposed penalty.

A senior IHMCL official emphasized the importance of accurate vehicle number entry during manual transactions, which remains a critical factor in preventing these erroneous deductions. The organization is committed to ensuring that users have a reliable and efficient toll payment experience.

The Role of FASTag in Modern Toll Collection

FASTag is a prepaid electronic tag that allows vehicles to pass through toll gates without stopping, utilizing Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. This system automatically deducts toll fees from a connected account, which users can manage through FASTag applications. The tag is affixed to the vehicle’s windscreen, enabling seamless communication with toll plaza scanning equipment.

The implementation of FASTag has revolutionized toll payments across India, significantly reducing wait times, lowering fuel consumption, and minimizing physical contact at toll booths. As the NHAI continues to enhance this system, addressing issues like false deductions is crucial for maintaining user trust and improving the overall efficiency of toll collection on national highways.
