Webinar Drives Strategies for Agricultural Growth

Union Minister Shri Rajeev Ranjan Singh, along with other key officials, participated in a virtual Post-Budget Webinar titled “Agriculture and Rural Prosperity” on March 1, 2025. Organized by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmersโ€™ Welfare, the event featured Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivering the keynote address. The discussions focused on implementing the 2025 Budget announcements, emphasizing agricultural growth and rural development through collaboration among various stakeholders.

Key Discussions on Agricultural Initiatives

The Post-Budget Webinar on “Agriculture and Rural Prosperity” included parallel discussions on several critical sub-themes, each led by designated Secretaries. Topics covered ranged from the Prime Minister Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana to enhancing credit through Kisan Credit Cards (KCC). Other significant areas of focus included building rural resilience, promoting self-reliance in pulses, and developing a comprehensive program for vegetables and fruits. The discussions also addressed the National Mission on High Yielding Seeds and initiatives aimed at boosting cotton productivity.

One of the highlights was the Framework for Harnessing Fisheries Resources in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and High Seas. This framework aims to support the National Cooperative Development Corporation and enhance the overall fisheries sector. The webinar sought to facilitate dialogue among stakeholders, including private sector experts and representatives from fishermen associations, ensuring a coordinated approach to achieving the budget’s objectives.

Prime Minister’s Vision for Sustainable Fisheries

In his address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the transformative impact of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) since its inception in 2019. He noted that the initiative has significantly strengthened fisheries infrastructure, doubled production, and increased exports. Modi reiterated the government’s commitment to sustainable fisheries management in the EEZ and High Seas through a strategic action plan. He urged stakeholders to implement these initiatives swiftly and explore innovative ideas to enhance the Ease of Doing Business within the sector.

Additionally, Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel highlighted India’s extensive marine resources within its 2.2 million square kilometers of EEZ. He discussed the role of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in advancing sustainable fisheries development and underscored the importance of promoting fisheries clusters. Baghel affirmed the government’s commitment to transforming the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep into major fisheries hubs, aiming to enhance local value chains and create sustainable economic opportunities for coastal communities.

Framework for Sustainable Fisheries Management

A breakout session titled “Framework for Sustainable Harnessing of Fisheries Resources in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of India and the High Seas” was chaired by Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi, Secretary of the Department of Fisheries. This session focused on policy interventions and strategies for responsible fisheries management, aiming to drive seafood exports and enhance food security while ensuring long-term sustainability.

Key industry experts and policymakers participated in discussions on deep-sea fishing, market linkages, and sustainability. Topics included vessel design, procurement, and the development of smart harbors. The session also explored credit facilities for fisheries cooperatives and sustainable offshore technologies for harnessing marine resources. The insights gained during this webinar are expected to lay a strong foundation for the sustainable development of India’s marine fisheries sector, balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility.

The collaborative efforts and strategic focus on the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep are set to unlock their vast marine potential, ensuring a sustainable future for the fisheries sector in India.
