9,000 Gramin Dak Sevaks Gather for Guntur Sammelan

In a remarkable show of unity and dedication, over 9,000 Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS) from the Andhra Pradesh Circle convened at a grand Sammelan in Guntur on February 22, 2026. This event highlighted the vital role of GDS in enhancing rural postal services and underscored their unwavering commitment to serve communities across the region.
Dignitaries Honor Rural Postal Workers
The Sammelan was attended by an array of dignitaries, including Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Shri N. Chandrababu Naidu, Union Minister for Communications Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, and Minister of State for Communications & Rural Development Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar. Their presence not only elevated the event but also showcased the significance of the GDS in the fabric of rural governance.
Recognizing Excellence
During the gathering, ten outstanding Gramin Dak Sevaks were recognized for their exemplary performance in various services such as Post Office Savings Schemes, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) services. Their efforts represent the dedication of GDS to financial inclusion and support for rural populations.
Transforming the Postal Landscape
Addressing the assembly, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia described the GDS as a crucial force linking every corner of India. He shared that India Post currently manages nearly 38 crore Post Office Savings Bank accounts with deposits totaling about ₹22 lakh crore. The Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana accounts, nearing 3.8 crore, contribute approximately ₹2.27 lakh crore in deposits, demonstrating the extensive reach and impact of the postal network on financial inclusion.
The Minister also highlighted ongoing modernization efforts within India Post, including advancements in mail and logistics operations. Implementation of technologies such as RFID, barcodes, and QR-code tracking aims to enhance service efficiency. Moreover, innovative drone-based delivery systems are being piloted in challenging terrains like Jammu & Kashmir and Uttarakhand, aiming for seamless last-mile connectivity.
Commitment to the Future
Minister of State Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar informed attendees that the Department of Posts operates around 1.65 lakh Post Offices with a workforce surpassing 4.5 lakh employees. He explained the financial dynamics of the department, noting an annual expenditure of approximately ₹35,000 crore against a revenue of about ₹13,000 crore. The Andhra Pradesh branch alone faced expenditures of around ₹1,800 crore against a revenue of ₹600 crore last year, indicating a positive trajectory this year.
Chief Minister Naidu commended the irreplaceable role of GDS personnel in delivering services at the grassroots level. He stressed the importance of maintaining a personal touch in their work, even in an era of rapid technological growth. Additionally, he advocated for green initiatives to support sustainable transportation for GDS staff.
