5G Services Expand Across India with Over 5 Lakh Stations Installed
In a significant stride towards modernizing telecommunications, the Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, announced that 5G services have been successfully launched in every state and union territory across India. Currently, these high-speed services are accessible in an impressive 99.9% of the country’s districts, a milestone that highlights India’s commitment to enhancing digital connectivity.
As of December 31, 2025, telecom service providers have established over 518,000 5G Base Transceiver Stations (BTSs) nationwide. Detailed data on the state-wise distribution of these BTS installations has been made available, further illustrating the extensive rollout of 5G technology across the country.
Government Initiatives to Boost 5G Coverage
To bolster the expansion of 5G networks, the government has implemented a series of pivotal measures. These initiatives include:
- Auctioning spectrum specifically for 5G mobile services in 2022.
- Introducing financial reforms aimed at rationalizing the Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR), Bank Guarantees (BGs), and interest rates to support telecom providers.
- Eliminating Spectrum Usage Charges for spectrum acquired in the 2022 auction and beyond.
- Simplifying the procedure for the Standing Advisory Committee on Radio Frequency Allocations (SACFA) clearance.
- Launching the GatiShakti Sanchar portal alongside new Right of Way (RoW) Rules to streamline the permissions and clearance processes for telecom infrastructure installations.
- Providing time-bound permissions for utilizing street furniture for small cell installations and telecommunications lines.
Enhancing Quality of Service
To ensure high-quality service across basic, mobile, and internet (data) services, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has introduced revised benchmarks for Quality of Service (QoS). These standards, established on August 2, 2024, under the regulation titled ‘The Standards of Quality of Service of Access (Wireline and Wireless) and Broadband (Wireline and Wireless) Service Regulations, 2024,’ will take effect from October 1, 2024. TRAI will actively monitor the performance of service providers against these benchmarks to ensure compliance.
As of the end of 2025, telecom providers have successfully deployed 5G BTSs in approximately 112,000 villages throughout India. However, the deployment in specific locations relies on various factors, such as technological feasibility, the prevalence of compatible 5G devices, and the availability of the required RoW permissions.
