Gabriel Vargas (5 February 1915 – 25 May 2010) is a Mexican cartoonist and comics artist best known for his work on the comic strip “La Familia Burrón”.

Life and Career

Gabriel Bernal Vargas was born on 5 February 1915 in Tulancingo, Hidalgo. began his career as a cartoonist in the 1940s, working for various Mexican newspapers and magazines.

In 1955, he created “La Familia Burrón”, which quickly became one of the most popular comic strips in Mexico and was eventually syndicated in newspapers across Latin America. The strip was notable for its humorous and often irreverent take on Mexican life and culture, and it earned Vargas a reputation as one of Mexico’s most talented cartoonists.

Over the course of his career, Vargas worked on a number of other comic strips and graphic novels, and his work has been widely recognized and celebrated in Mexico and beyond. He was awarded the National Prize for Arts and Sciences in the Popular Art and Traditions category in 1992, and he was also inducted into the Salón de la Fama del Comics Mexicano (Mexican Comics Hall of Fame) in 2011.

Gabriel Vargas passed away on 25 May 2010, at the age of 95. His life and career continue to be remembered and celebrated as an important part of Mexican cultural history.
