Meena Kumari (1 August 1933 – 31 March 1972) was an Indian actress and poet, who worked in Hindi films. Popularly known as The Tragedy Queen. She was active between 1939 and 1972.
Life and Career
She was born on August 1, 1933, in Mumbai, India, with the birth name Mahjabeen Bano. Meena Kumari’s life, career, and untimely death left a profound impact on the Indian film industry and its audiences. Meena Kumari’s entry into the film industry happened at a very young age. Her father, Ali Baksh, was a veteran film actor, and he introduced her to acting. She made her film debut at the tender age of 6 with the film “Farzand-e-Watan” in 1943. However, it was her role as a heroine in “Baiju Bawra” (1952) that brought her immense recognition and established her as a talented actress.
Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Meena Kumari appeared in a series of critically acclaimed and commercially successful films. She earned the moniker “Tragedy Queen” due to her ability to portray emotionally complex and poignant characters. Some of her notable films include “Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam” (1962), “Pakeezah” (1972), “Parineeta” (1953), “Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai” (1960), and “Kaajal” (1965).
Meena Kumari’s personal life was marked by emotional turmoil and failed relationships. She had a troubled marriage with filmmaker Kamal Amrohi, who directed her in “Pakeezah.” The marriage ended in divorce, adding to her emotional distress. Her poignant portrayals of tragic heroines on screen often mirrored her real-life struggles.
Meena Kumari’s life was tragically cut short when she passed away on March 31, 1972, at the age of 38. She died due to cirrhosis of the liver, a result of excessive alcohol consumption. Her untimely death shocked the film industry and her fans, leaving a void that was difficult to fill.

Meena Kumari’s talent as an actress was widely recognized, and she received several accolades for her performances. She was nominated for several Filmfare Awards and won the Best Actress award for her role in “Kaajal” (1966).

On 1 August 2018, Google celebrated Meena Kumari’s 85th Birthday with a doodle.
