2K Confirms Borderlands 4 Pricing Will Not Be $80

Weeks after Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford hinted that Borderlands 4 might be priced at $80, 2K Games has officially confirmed that the game will not carry that price tag. Instead, the highly anticipated looter shooter will be available for $70, aligning with the new pricing standard for triple-A titles on current-generation consoles. Pre-orders for Borderlands 4 are now open for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S/X.

Borderlands 4 Pricing and Editions Announced

On Monday, 2K Games revealed the pricing and pre-order details for Borderlands 4, outlining the various editions available to fans. The game will be released in three editions: Standard, Deluxe, and Super Deluxe, priced at $69.99, $99.99, and $129.99, respectively. In India, these editions will cost Rs. 3,999, Rs. 5,699, and Rs. 7,499 on PC through platforms like Steam and the Epic Games Store. Console prices are set at Rs. 4,999, Rs. 7,499, and Rs. 9,799.

The Standard Edition includes the base game, while the Deluxe Edition adds the Bounty Pack Bundle, which features four post-launch DLC packs, four Vault Cards with unique challenges and rewards, new gear and weapons, four new vehicles, and Vault Hunter cosmetics, including the Firehawk’s Fury weapon skin. Each DLC pack will introduce distinct areas, new missions, and unique bosses, as confirmed by 2K.

The Super Deluxe Edition encompasses all the benefits of the Deluxe Edition and includes the Vault Hunter Pack. This pack features two new Story Packs, each introducing a new Vault Hunter, story, and side missions, along with two new map regions, additional gear and weapons, more Vault Hunter cosmetics, and new ECHO-4 cosmetics. Additionally, it includes the Ornate Order Pack, which consists of four extra Vault Hunter Skins, four Vault Hunter Heads, and four Vault Hunter Bodies.

Controversy Surrounding Pricing Comments

Randy Pitchford faced backlash last month for his comments regarding the potential pricing of Borderlands 4. In a response to a user on X (formerly Twitter), he stated that he did not have control over the game’s pricing and suggested that a “real fan” would be willing to pay $80 for it. This remark drew criticism from the gaming community, prompting Pitchford to later apologize, stating that it was not his intention to make fans feel taken for granted.

During a Borderlands 4 panel in May, Pitchford further clarified his views on game pricing, expressing uncertainty about the final cost. He acknowledged the competitive nature of the gaming market and the increasing development budgets, noting that the budget for Borderlands 4 was more than double that of its predecessor, Borderlands 3. He emphasized that while some stakeholders are cautious about raising prices, others recognize the financial pressures facing the industry.

Following the announcement of Borderlands 4’s pre-order and pricing details, Pitchford claimed there was no price increase for the game. However, this statement was misleading, as Borderlands 3 was originally priced at $60. He stated, “The big news: No price increase for Borderlands 4! Standard Edition launches not at $80, but at $69.99! They’re showing you, so please show them,” despite the reality of the price adjustment.

Industry Trends in Game Pricing

The conversation around game pricing has evolved significantly in recent years, particularly as triple-A titles on platforms like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X have surpassed the traditional $60 price point, settling at $70. This trend has gained further momentum with Nintendo’s announcement that Mario Kart World, a launch title for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, will retail for $80.

In addition, Microsoft has recently declared plans to increase the prices of Xbox consoles and some first-party games, raising their costs from $70 to $80 for the upcoming holiday season. During the Xbox Games Showcase on June 8, the company revealed that The Outer Worlds 2, an anticipated triple-A RPG, would also be priced at $80. Borderlands 4 is set to launch on September 12 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S/X, with a version for the Switch 2 expected to follow later this year.
