2026 Crop Area Sowing Statistics Released: Key Insights
The latest government report on crop sowing reveals significant updates in agricultural practices for 2026. This year, while the total area sown shows a decrease in certain crops compared to last year, an increase is seen in pulses and oilseeds. Farmers are adjusting their planting strategies in response to changing agricultural demands and climatic conditions.
Rice and Grain Statistics
Rice cultivation has experienced a slight decline, with a current sown area of 30.12 lakh hectares compared to 32.59 lakh hectares from the previous year. This marks a decrease of 2.47 lakh hectares against the normal summer area estimation of 31.49 lakh hectares. In contrast, the final summer area for 2025 was recorded at 33.28 lakh hectares, indicating a downward trend in rice planting.
Growth in Pulses and Coarse Cereals
Pulses, including greengram and blackgram, have seen an upward trend this year. The total area sown for pulses stands at 8.79 lakh hectares, a notable increase from 7.02 lakh hectares last year, reflecting a growth of 1.77 lakh hectares. Additionally, coarse cereals, which include maize and bajra, also show promising sowing statistics with an area of 11.64 lakh hectares sown this year, as opposed to 10.77 lakh hectares last year.
Oilseeds Show Improvement
Oilseed cultivation is also on the rise with the current year reporting 7.74 lakh hectares sown, compared to 7.42 lakh hectares from last year. Groundnut and sunflower have emerged as key contributors to this increase. Current estimates for groundnut stand at 4.59 lakh hectares, slightly higher than 4.20 lakh hectares recorded last year.
