10 Crore Citizens Mobilized for National Pledge Against Drug Abuse
The Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment is on a mission to engage over 10 Crore citizens in a nationwide pledge against drug abuse. This initiative marks the 6th anniversary of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA) and is set to take place at the end of this month, aiming to raise awareness and promote community participation in combating substance abuse.
A high-level coordination meeting was held today in the National Capital, chaired by Joint Secretary Dr. Sandeep Rewaji Rathod. The meeting emphasized the critical need for a ‘Whole of the Government’ and ‘Whole of the Society’ approach. The goal is to mobilize stakeholders to educate the public about the severe consequences of drug abuse affecting various sectors of society across the nation.
Engaging All Sectors for a Drug-Free India
Representatives from various ministries and departments participated in detailed discussions on strategies to encourage public involvement. They reviewed plans that include organizing pledge ceremonies at government offices, educational institutions, and other affiliated organizations. Key departments involved include Railways, Defence, Youth Affairs, Health, and more, ensuring a comprehensive reach across the nation.
Dr. Rathod highlighted the importance of collaboration in this initiative, aiming to enable officers, officials, students, and volunteers to participate in the pledge. This pledge is not just a statement; it represents a commitment to fostering a drug-free environment and empowering youth to take an active role in this mission.
Digital Platforms for Participation
The NMBA also offers an e-pledge option available at Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan e-Pledge, allowing for easy online registration. The initiative directs citizens to the Helpline—14446 for drug de-addiction support. Additionally, the government encourages individuals to register as Nasha Mukti Mitr through its official website, promoting community involvement in the campaign.
Broad Outreach and Support Initiatives
Since its launch on August 15, 2020, the NMBA has made significant strides, reaching over 34.42 Crore individuals, including more than 13.64 Crore youth and 10.58 Crore women. Over 1.65 Lakh volunteers, known as Nasha Mukti Mitras, have joined efforts to bolster community engagement.
The Ministry’s commitment includes providing financial aid to states, NGOs, and hospitals for drug demand reduction initiatives. With tools like the NMBA 2.0 Mobile Application, citizens can easily find nearby de-addiction centers, ensuring accessible support for those in need.
The Indian government remains steadfast in its pursuit of a drug-free and socially supportive society. Ongoing community participation, enhanced preventive measures, and improved service delivery are pivotal components of this national effort, aiming to protect vulnerable populations and promote social justice across the nation.
