Yoga Institutions Collaborate with Ministries to Promote Global Wellness

In anticipation of the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY), an Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) convened on Tuesday at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan in New Delhi. The meeting aimed to strategize preparations for IDY 2025, emphasizing a collaborative approach among various government ministries and stakeholders. Union Minister of State for Ayush, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, underscored the importance of uniting efforts to promote yoga as a global wellness movement, highlighting the extensive participation expected for this year’s celebrations.
Commitment to a Whole-of-Government Approach
During the meeting, Shri Prataprao Jadhav delivered a keynote address that highlighted the government’s commitment to a Whole-of-Government approach in promoting yoga. He stated that the International Day of Yoga is more than just a celebration; it represents a movement that brings together various ministries, institutions, and citizens in a collective effort towards holistic health. The Minister noted that over 250 events have already taken place across India and internationally, generating significant momentum leading up to IDY 2025. He called for intensified efforts in the final stages of preparation, emphasizing the importance of participation from all sectors. Since March 13, a series of daily countdown events have engaged communities worldwide, showcasing the enthusiasm surrounding the upcoming celebration.
Expanding Global Participation
The Secretary of the Ministry of Ayush opened the meeting by stressing the significance of IDY 2025. He pointed out that the event has grown into one of the largest global movements, with an estimated 240 million participants in IDY 2024 alone in India. This year, the Ministry aims for even greater engagement, planning to host over 100,000 yoga events simultaneously on June 21, 2025. The Prime Minister is expected to lead the national celebration from Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The Secretary emphasized that IDY should be viewed as part of a broader global wellness movement rather than a one-day observance. He reiterated India’s call for international participation, aligning with the theme “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” which resonates with the World Health Organization’s message of “One World, One Health.”
Preparations and Anticipated Participation
A detailed presentation by the OSD โ IDY Coordination outlined the preparations and support needed from various stakeholders. The OSD noted that IDY, initiated in 2015 following a resolution at the UN General Assembly, has evolved into a Whole-of-the-Nation movement. With more than 250 events already conducted, including online initiatives, the national event in Visakhapatnam is expected to attract over 500,000 participants. Additionally, the Ministries of Tourism and Culture plan to host IDY events at 150 iconic tourist sites across India, further enhancing the celebration’s reach and impact.
A Call for Collective Action
Ms. Monalisa Dash, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Ayush, emphasized that the International Day of Yoga is a celebration of India’s rich cultural heritage and its contribution to global wellness. As the 11th edition approaches, the focus is on deeper engagement and broader outreach to ensure lasting impact. The meeting concluded with a strong call for collective action and shared responsibility among all participants to make IDY 2025 a transformative experience, reflecting India’s ongoing commitment to promoting health and wellness on a global scale.
