WWDC 2025: Apple Expands AI Models Access for Developers

Apple has unveiled a suite of new artificial intelligence (AI) features at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025, branded as Apple Intelligence. During the keynote address, the tech giant highlighted existing AI functionalities and introduced several new features that will soon be available for testing. Among the notable additions are Live Translation, Workout Buddy for Apple Watch, ChatGPT integration in Visual Intelligence, and enhancements to Genmoji and Image Playground experiences. These innovations are set to roll out to users later this year.
Apple Brings Foundation Models Framework to Developers
Craig Federighi, Appleโs Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, announced a significant development for app developers: access to the companyโs on-device foundation models. These models, which power various Apple Intelligence features, will now be available to third-party developers through the Foundation Models Framework. This initiative allows developers to create new features or even entirely new applications using Appleโs proprietary AI models.
One of the key advantages of these on-device models is their ability to function offline, ensuring that user data remains secure and does not leave the device. Developers will benefit from this framework without incurring any costs associated with application programming interface (API) usage for cloud-based inference. The framework is designed to support Swift, making it easier for developers to integrate AI capabilities into their applications. Additionally, it includes features such as guided generation and tool calling, further enhancing the development experience.
New Apple Intelligence Features
While Federighi confirmed that Siri will not receive the advanced AI features teased at last year’s WWDC until 2026, Apple is preparing to launch several new functionalities this year. One of the standout features is Live Translation, which will be integrated into the Messages app, FaceTime, and Phone app. This AI-powered tool will facilitate communication between users who speak different languages, ensuring that conversations remain private and secure.
Live Translation will automatically translate messages in real-time, allowing users to send and receive messages in their preferred language. In FaceTime, the feature will provide live captions in the userโs language, enhancing accessibility during video calls. For phone calls, Live Translation will convert spoken words into the desired language and vocalize them, making it easier for users to communicate seamlessly.
Visual Intelligence
In addition to Live Translation, Apple is enhancing its Visual Intelligence capabilities. Users will now be able to interact with ChatGPT while using their device’s camera. This integration allows the AI to understand the context of what users are viewing and respond to their inquiries. For instance, users can search for similar products on platforms like Google and Etsy simply by pointing their camera at an item.
Moreover, Visual Intelligence can recognize events in the userโs surroundings and suggest adding them to the calendar. Users can also share images with the feature by pressing the buttons typically used for taking screenshots, allowing them to ask questions about the captured content.
Workout Buddy
The Apple Watch is set to receive a new AI feature called Workout Buddy, designed to enhance the userโs fitness experience. This feature analyzes workout data and fitness history to provide personalized motivational insights during exercise sessions. By evaluating metrics such as heart rate, pace, and distance, Workout Buddy generates voice-based feedback using a new text-to-speech model.
This model incorporates voices developed from Appleโs Fitness+ trainers, ensuring that the feedback is delivered with the appropriate energy and style. Workout Buddy will be compatible with Apple Watch and Bluetooth headphones, requiring an Apple Intelligence-supported iPhone nearby. Initially, the feature will be available in English for specific workouts, including running, cycling, and strength training.
Genmoji and Image Playground
Apple is also updating its Genmoji and Image Playground features this year. In Genmoji, users will have the ability to combine emojis and add text prompts to create unique variations. They can customize expressions and personal attributes, such as hairstyles, when generating images inspired by friends and family.
Image Playground will integrate with ChatGPT to offer new image styles. Users can describe the type of image they want, and the description will be sent to ChatGPT, which will generate the requested image. Users will need to consent to share their data with the OpenAI chatbot for this feature to function. These updates reflect Appleโs commitment to enhancing user creativity and interaction through AI technology.
