‘WTC Breathes New Life into Test Cricket,’ Says ICC Chief

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially launched the World Test Championship cycle for 2025-27, following South Africa’s triumph in the 2025 final. The new cycle will kick off with Sri Lanka hosting Bangladesh for a two-match Test series beginning June 17, and a five-Test series featuring England and India. Additionally, Australia will face the West Indies in a three-Test series, competing for the Frank Worrell Trophy. A total of nine teams will participate, each playing six other nations during the two-year competition.

World Test Championship Structure

The World Test Championship for the 2025-27 cycle will involve nine competing teams. Each team is scheduled to play a total of six other teamsโ€”three matches at home and three away. This format aims to enhance the competitive nature of Test cricket globally. The points system remains consistent with previous editions, awarding 12 points for a win, six for a tie, and four for a draw. This structure has been designed to keep fans engaged and to bring additional context to matches played under the Test format.

Australia is set to play a total of 22 matches in this cycle, including 11 at home. Their schedule features a highly anticipated Ashes series against England and four Tests against New Zealand. England’s campaign will include 11 home Tests and 10 away matches, which consist of a crucial three-Test tour to South Africa, the reigning champions, scheduled for December 2026. India will also have a packed schedule, participating in 18 matches split evenly between home and away fixtures.

Key Upcoming Series

The inaugural series of the new World Test Championship cycle will see Sri Lanka take on Bangladesh, starting on June 17. This two-Test series promises to be an exciting opener for the championship. Meanwhile, India and England will engage in a five-Test series that will be played across five historic venues: Headingley, Edgbaston, Lord’s, Old Trafford, and The Oval. This series represents a significant event in the cricket calendar and is expected to attract large audiences both in the stadiums and through global broadcasts.

Australia’s series against the West Indies will also add to the excitement. The three-Test series will see the teams compete for the prestigious Frank Worrell Trophy. The combination of these series will set the tone for the upcoming cycle, showcasing the strength and skill of the participating nations.

ICC Chairman’s Remarks

ICC Chairman Jay Shah expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming World Test Championship cycle. He noted that the conclusion of the last cycle at Lord’s was a thrilling event, as South Africa and Australia engaged in a classic finale. Shah emphasized the importance of maintaining a high level of competitiveness in Test cricket, highlighting that the championship has already invigorated the format by providing context for players and fans alike.

Shah also acknowledged the support from member boards that has made this concept successful. He looks forward to the journey of the participating teams as they aim for the next final in 2027. The ICC’s commitment to promoting Test cricket continues to be demonstrated through this championship, which has seen increasing viewership and attendance at matches, further cementing its place in the hearts of cricket fans around the world.
