WPC Announces Qi2 25W Wireless Charging Specification

The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has introduced its latest wireless charging standard, Qi2 25W, which promises to enhance charging speeds significantly. This new specification, also known as Qi v2.2.1, is designed to provide 70% more power than its predecessor, Qi2, which supports 15W charging. Both Android smartphones and Apple’s iPhone are expected to adopt this new standard, allowing for faster wireless charging comparable to Apple’s MagSafe 2 technology.

Adoption of Qi2 25W by Major Smartphone Brands

The WPC has announced that major Android smartphone manufacturers will adopt the Qi2 25W specification, although specific models that will support this faster charging have not yet been disclosed. Apple’s iPhone models, which already utilize the MagSafe 2 standard, will also be compatible with Qi2 25W charging. This development marks a significant step forward in wireless charging technology, as it aims to streamline the charging process for users of both Android and Apple devices. The introduction of Qi2 25W follows the earlier launch of the Qi2 standard in 2023, which allowed for 15W charging on compatible devices. Unlike previous Qi-certified smartphones that could charge at 7.5W, Qi2 and Qi2 25W devices require magnets for proper alignment with the charger.

Current Compatibility and Future Prospects

Currently, only a limited number of smartphones, such as the Samsung Galaxy S25 series and the HMD Skyline, are compatible with Qi2 technology. Among these, only the HMD Skyline is equipped with the necessary magnets for optimal Qi2 charging. Other manufacturers have provided support through cases that include magnets. Recently, Samsung conducted a survey through its Members app, asking users if they would prefer smartphones with built-in magnets for wireless charging, even if this feature increased the device’s thickness. This indicates a growing interest in enhancing wireless charging capabilities among consumers.

Certification Process and Future Devices

The WPC has reported that fourteen devices, including receivers and transmitters, have successfully passed the Qi2 25W certification process as part of a limited launch. The organization plans to test several hundred additional devices in the near future. However, it remains unclear whether most of these devices will be charging accessories or smartphones. As the market evolves, consumers can expect to see new handsets that support Qi2 25W wireless charging emerge in the coming months, potentially transforming the wireless charging landscape.
