Women Peacekeepers Highlighted at Global Conference

In a significant gathering in New Delhi, the role of women in peacekeeping was emphasized during the conference titled โ€˜Women in Peacekeeping – A Global South Perspectiveโ€™ held on February 25, 2025. Organized by the Centre for United Nations Peacekeeping in India, the two-day event brought together women peacekeepers from India and 35 other nations to discuss their evolving roles and strategies for enhancing their participation in peacekeeping missions. Raksha Rajya Mantri Shri Sanjay Seth underscored the importance of gender diversity in fostering sustainable peace and security.

India’s Commitment to Peacekeeping

During his valedictory address, Raksha Rajya Mantri Shri Sanjay Seth highlighted India’s longstanding commitment to peacekeeping operations, noting that the country has deployed over 290,000 troops in more than 50 UN missions over the past seven decades. He stated, โ€œPeacekeeping is not just about deploying forces but about strengthening capacities, enhancing preparedness, and ensuring a people-centric, culturally sensitive, and inclusive approach to conflict resolution.โ€ Seth emphasized that the involvement of women peacekeepers is crucial for addressing the unique needs of women and children in conflict zones, thereby fostering a more inclusive peacekeeping environment.

Unity Among Global South Nations

Shri Sanjay Seth addressed the changing security landscape characterized by multiple conflicts and emerging challenges. He called for unity among Global South nations to achieve peace, prosperity, and stability. โ€œCountries must learn from each other’s experiences, leverage collective wisdom, and pool resources to transform shared aspirations into tangible progress,โ€ he stated. This call to action reflects a broader vision of collaboration aimed at enhancing global security and addressing the complexities of modern conflicts.

Guiding Principles for Global Engagement

Reiterating Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s vision, Seth outlined five guiding principles for India’s global engagement: Respect, Dialogue, Cooperation, Peace, and Prosperity. He emphasized that these principles reflect India’s commitment to fostering a just and balanced world order that represents the aspirations of all nations. โ€œOur priorities must be human-centric, multi-dimensional, and sustainable, ensuring that growth is inclusive, equitable, and environmentally conscious,โ€ he added, reinforcing the need for a comprehensive approach to global peacekeeping efforts.

Recognizing Women Peacekeepers’ Contributions

At the conclusion of the conference, Shri Sanjay Seth recognized the exceptional contributions of women peacekeepers, stating that they serve as role models who challenge traditional gender norms and inspire local women to pursue leadership roles. The conference also addressed critical issues impacting UN peacekeepers, including discussions on tackling sexual exploitation and abuse within peacekeeping environments.
