Windows 11 Introduces Two Exciting AI Enhancements for Copilot+ PCs and One Potentially Frustrating Change

Windows 11 has unveiled a new preview build in its Beta channel, introducing significant enhancements to voice dictation and expanding the capabilities of Windows Studio Effects. This update, designated as build 26120.5790, aims to improve user experience by making voice dictation smoother and smarter, while also allowing AI-powered effects to be utilized with various webcams. However, some users may find the new additions to File Explorer’s Home panel unnecessary, as they could contribute to visual clutter.
Enhanced Voice Dictation Features
The latest update to Windows 11 introduces a feature known as “fluid dictation,” which Microsoft claims enhances the voice dictation experience. This improvement includes automatic corrections for grammatical and punctuation errors, as well as the removal of filler words that users often insert while speaking. The goal is to create a more seamless dictation process, allowing users to focus on their thoughts without worrying about manual corrections. This feature is particularly beneficial for those who rely on voice input for writing or note-taking, as it minimizes the need for subsequent editing.
Expanded Access to Windows Studio Effects
Another notable change in this preview build is the expanded availability of Windows Studio Effects. Previously limited to the built-in cameras of Copilot+ devices, these AI-driven effects can now be applied to external USB webcams and additional cameras on laptops. This enhancement allows users to utilize features such as background blurring and simulated eye contact during video calls, regardless of the camera being used. Interestingly, the rollout of this feature prioritizes Intel CPU devices, with support for Snapdragon and AMD devices to follow. This shift marks a departure from the usual trend of Snapdragon devices receiving updates first.
File Explorer’s New Options
In addition to the voice and webcam enhancements, Microsoft has introduced new functionalities in File Explorer’s Home panel. Users will now see options when hovering over files, including the ability to open the file’s location and to ask Copilot for assistance regarding the file. However, these features require users to be signed in to a Microsoft account to function. While some may appreciate the added convenience, others might view it as unnecessary clutter in the interface.
Privacy Considerations and Device Limitations
Microsoft has addressed potential privacy concerns related to the new voice dictation capabilities. The company emphasizes that the AI processing for dictation occurs on-device, meaning that no data is sent to Microsoft’s servers. Additionally, voice dictation is disabled in text fields that require sensitive information, such as passwords. Users who prefer not to use these features can easily disable them. It is important to note that both the enhanced voice dictation and Windows Studio Effects are exclusive to Copilot+ PCs, leaving standard Windows 11 devices without access to these updates.
