WhatsApp Set to Introduce Motion Photo Sharing

WhatsApp is gearing up to enhance its messaging platform by introducing support for sharing motion photos in chats and channels. This new feature, currently in development, will allow users to send brief audio-visual clips captured alongside still images. Initially spotted in the latest beta version for Android, iPhone users can expect to view these as Live Photos in the future.
New Motion Photos Feature in Development
According to reports from WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is actively working on a feature that will enable users to share motion photos in individual chats, group conversations, and channels. This functionality was first identified in the WhatsApp beta version 2.25.8.12 for Android, which is being rolled out to select beta testers via the Google Play Store. However, users should note that the feature is still under development and is not yet available for public testing. Motion photos, which are supported on certain Android devices, allow users to capture a short video clip along with a still image. This feature, known as Top Shot on Pixel phones, records a brief video and audio while taking a photo. For iPhone users, the equivalent feature is referred to as Live Photos. The feature tracker has successfully enabled this capability, revealing a new media picker icon in the top right corner of the pop-up card, located next to the HD button.
Once the feature is fully operational, Android users will be able to share motion photos directly with others. Currently, these images are sent as static photos, but the upcoming update will allow for the sharing of dynamic motion pictures or Live Photos on iOS. Notably, while the ability to capture motion photos is limited to specific Android smartphones, WhatsApp plans to ensure that recipients can view these images even on unsupported devices. This suggests that the platform will likely include support for viewing motion photos across all Android phones, while iOS users will see them as Live Photos.
Timeline for Feature Rollout Remains Uncertain
As with many features still in development, there is no confirmed timeline for when WhatsApp will begin rolling out this functionality to beta testers. Once the feature is ready for testing, it will first be made available to Android beta testers before a broader release to all users on the stable channel. Users are encouraged to stay tuned for updates regarding this exciting new addition to the WhatsApp platform.
