WhatsApp Developing Document Scanning Feature

WhatsApp is developing a new feature for Android users that will enable document scanning directly within the app. This functionality, which has been available on iOS for some time, allows users to scan documents without leaving the messaging platform. In addition to this, WhatsApp has recently begun testing an AI feature that provides message summaries for select beta testers on Android devices.

Document Scanning Feature in Development

WhatsApp is currently working on a document scanning feature for Android smartphones, nearly six months after it was introduced on iOS. The feature was identified by WABetaInfo following an update to WhatsApp beta version 2.25.18.29. Although the scanning capability is still under development and not yet available to beta users, it is expected to be integrated soon. Once launched, users will find the new “Scan Document” option alongside the existing “Browse Documents” and “Choose from Gallery” selections when attaching documents in chats.

When users tap the “Scan Document” button, the app will activate the camera. They will have the option to either manually capture images or allow the app to automatically detect and scan documents. After scanning all pages, WhatsApp will compile the images into a PDF file, which can then be sent to other users or saved to the device’s local storage for sharing with other applications.

Alternative Document Scanning Options

While WhatsApp is finalizing its document scanning feature, users can still utilize the Google Drive app, which is pre-installed on most Android devices, to scan documents. This interim solution allows users to manage their document scanning needs until WhatsApp rolls out its dedicated feature to beta testers and eventually to the stable version of the app.

The anticipated document scanning functionality is expected to enhance the user experience by streamlining the process of sharing important documents directly through the messaging platform. Once available, it will provide a convenient alternative to existing methods of document sharing.

AI-Powered Message Summarization

In addition to the document scanning feature, WhatsApp has also started testing an AI-powered message summarization tool for select beta testers on Android. Users who have updated to WhatsApp beta version 2.25.18.18 or newer may notice a new “Summarise with Meta AI” button in chats with a specific number of new messages. This feature aims to provide concise summaries of conversations, enhancing communication efficiency.

The summarization process involves sending a request to Meta’s Private Processing system, which is designed to safeguard user privacy. However, users who have activated Advanced Chat Protection for specific chats will not receive AI-generated summaries for those conversations. This feature reflects WhatsApp’s commitment to integrating advanced technology while prioritizing user privacy and security.

Future Rollout Plans

WhatsApp’s new features, including document scanning and AI message summarization, are currently in the testing phase and will first be available to beta testers. Following successful testing and feedback, these features are expected to be rolled out to all users in future updates. As WhatsApp continues to innovate and enhance its platform, users can look forward to more efficient and user-friendly functionalities in their messaging experience.
