WEF Expands Global Network with New Industry 4.0 Centre in India
The World Economic Forum (WEF) has announced the establishment of five new Centres for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, including one in Andhra Pradesh, India. This initiative aims to enhance India’s influence in shaping global frameworks for emerging technologies. The decision was revealed at the conclusion of the WEF’s annual meeting, where it was also noted that new centres will be set up in France, the UK, and the UAE. India currently hosts two existing centres in Mumbai and Telangana.
Global Expansion of the Fourth Industrial Revolution Network
The Fourth Industrial Revolution Network, initiated by the WEF in 2017, serves as a collaborative platform for governments, industries, and experts. Its primary goal is to ensure that emerging technologies provide societal benefits while minimizing associated risks. The network connects independent national and thematic centres across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas. With the addition of the new centres, the WEF aims to bolster international cooperation and address regional priorities effectively.
Each centre will collaborate closely with local governments and industries to develop practical policy frameworks and implement pilot projects. The focus will be on critical areas such as artificial intelligence, energy transition, cyber resilience, and frontier technologies. WEF President Borge Brende emphasized the importance of uniting governments, industries, and experts to tackle shared technological challenges. He noted that local insights from partners would enhance global efforts to advance emerging technologies responsibly.
Andhra Pradesh Centre’s Focus Areas
The new centre in Andhra Pradesh will be established in partnership with the state government and will concentrate on energy and cyber resilience. Its mission is to foster innovation-driven approaches to the energy transition while enhancing cyber resilience across various industries. The centre will engage in pilot projects, consultations, and knowledge exchanges to develop scalable solutions in areas such as green energy systems, cybersecurity strategies, and workforce development.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed that this partnership with the WEF aligns with the state’s commitment to building capacity in critical areas, including energy security and trusted digital systems. The centre aims to address the challenges faced by regions that are most vulnerable, ensuring that technological advancements benefit all sectors of society.
Strengthening the Global Network
The establishment of these new centres will further fortify the global Fourth Industrial Revolution Network, which already includes centres in countries such as Azerbaijan, Colombia, Germany, Korea, Israel, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, South Africa, the US, Ukraine, and Vietnam. As the network continues to expand, the WEF remains dedicated to supporting the responsible development and deployment of emerging technologies to meet global priorities.
