Webinar Launches Initiative for Textile Export Growth
The Ministry of Textiles held a National Consultative Webinar today, uniting States and Union Territories in preparation for the upcoming Departmental Summit titled “Textiles for Global Markets.” Scheduled to take place in June 2026, this event aims to enhance coordination between the central and state governments in promoting growth in the textile sector.
In her opening remarks, the Secretary of Textiles pointed out that although the domestic textile industry has experienced steady growth, the export figures have not kept pace, remaining modest in recent years. She shared an ambitious national goal to boost textile and apparel exports from approximately USD 40 billion to USD 100 billion by 2030. Achieving this target requires close collaboration with regional governments to foster a focused and outcome-driven agenda for the upcoming Summit.
Identifying Gaps and Challenges
During the webinar, the Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Textiles discussed the objectives of the consultative process. This initiative aims to pinpoint policy gaps, tackle infrastructure deficiencies, and address logistics challenges affecting exports. Identifying these areas will help facilitate strategic interventions at both state and national levels.
Insights into Export Potential
The Trade Advisor from the Ministry provided an overview of India’s textile export landscape, emphasizing the need for diversification, technology adoption, and enhancement of value chains. Additionally, the Deputy Director-General of the Ministry introduced the District-Led Textile Transformation (DLTT) initiative, designed to boost export competitiveness at the district level through improved coordination, scheme convergence, and data-driven planning. Panipat was showcased as a model district to illustrate this approach.
Engaging States and Union Territories
Participants were encouraged to engage in Bharat Tex 2026, an important global event scheduled for July 14-17, 2026. This platform focuses on investment promotion, networking, and showcasing state textile ecosystems.
During the interactive session, states brought forward various concerns, including the expansion of textile districts, logistic and infrastructure challenges, and the need for skill development and technological support for MSMEs. They underscored the significance of supporting handloom and traditional sectors, as well as fostering cluster-based export strategies. Some states requested tailored policy support for specialized textile products to enhance the export readiness of smaller producers.
Next Steps for Growth
The Ministry announced that the next stages would involve state-level stakeholder consultations, crafting district export action plans, and further engagement to refine the agenda for the National Conference. The commitment to work collaboratively with States and Union Territories was reaffirmed to enhance India’s global standing in textiles through coordinated policy support and district-focused export strategies.
