WAVES Anime & Manga Contest: A New Era for Creators

The WAVES Anime & Manga Contest (WAM!) is an exciting initiative that aims to tap into India’s growing passion for anime and manga. This contest provides a platform for creators to showcase their talents and creativity. Organized by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting in collaboration with the Media & Entertainment Association of India (MEAI), WAM! encourages artists to develop localized adaptations of popular Japanese styles. This initiative caters to both Indian and global audiences, offering opportunities for publishing, distribution, and industry exposure. The competition will feature state-level contests across 11 cities, culminating in a grand national finale at WAVES 2025 in Mumbai.
A Platform for Emerging Talent
WAM! is part of the Create in India Challenges, a flagship initiative under the World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES). This summit will take place from May 1 to May 4, 2025, at the Jio World Convention Centre & Jio World Gardens in Mumbai. WAVES serves as a premier forum for discussions, collaborations, and innovations in the media and entertainment industry. It brings together global stakeholders to explore new opportunities and shape the future of the sector. The Create in India Challenges have already seen over 70,000 registrations worldwide, empowering emerging talents with a global stage to showcase their work.
Through WAM!, India reinforces its position as a vibrant hub for anime and manga. The contest bridges artistic traditions with contemporary storytelling, allowing creators to express their unique perspectives. This initiative not only promotes artistic expression but also nurtures emerging talent by providing them with the necessary resources and exposure to thrive in the competitive landscape of anime and manga.
Categories and Eligibility Criteria
WAM! features various categories for participants, including Manga, Webtoon, and Anime. Each category has specific requirements that participants must meet. For instance, the Manga category allows both student and professional submissions, requiring two pages with at least four panels each, in ink and color. The Webtoon category has separate requirements for students and professionals, with varying panel counts and formats.
To participate, creators must adhere to the eligibility criteria set forth by the contest organizers. Participants must create and submit their work within the specified timeframe and format. The contest also provides scripts on the spot for all categories, ensuring that participants have the necessary materials to create their submissions. This structured approach allows for a fair and competitive environment, encouraging creativity and innovation among participants.
Competition Schedule and Prizes
The competition will unfold through a series of state-level contests leading up to the grand finale. The events will take place in various cities, including Guwahati, Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, and Delhi, among others. Each event will have specific dates and venues, with registration details provided for participants. The grand finale will be held at the WAVES summit in May 2025, where state-level winners will compete for top honors.
Winners of the contest will receive exciting prizes, including an all-expenses-paid trip to Anime Japan and other international events. This opportunity is supported by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, further enhancing the contest’s appeal. Additionally, participants will have the chance to engage in cosplay competitions and other performances, adding a vibrant atmosphere to the event. The WAM!
