Walter Reed: Yellow Fever and Modern Epidemiology
Walter Reed (September 13, 1851 – November 23, 1902) was a U.S. Army physician. In 1901, he led the team that confirmed yellow fever is transmitted by mosquitoes rather than by direct contact, a discovery that launched epidemiology and biomedicine as modern fields and enabled completion of the Panama Canal.
Early Life and Education
Reed was born on September 13, 1851, at 4021 Hickory Fork Road near Gloucester, Virginia, the fifth child of Lemuel Sutton Reed, a traveling Methodist minister, and Pharaba White. During his youth, the family lived in Murfreesboro, North Carolina, with his mother’s relatives while his father conducted preaching tours. Two of his older brothers distinguished themselves professionally: J.C. became a minister in Virginia, and Christopher became a judge in Wichita, Kansas, and later St. Louis, Missouri.
Reed enrolled at the University of Virginia and completed his M.D. degree in 1869, two months before turning 18, making him the youngest-ever recipient of an M.D. from that institution. He then pursued a second M.D. from New York University’s Bellevue Hospital Medical College in Manhattan, earning it in 1870. After interning at several New York City hospitals, he worked for the New York Board of Health until 1875.
Personal Life
Reed married Emily Blackwell Lawrence of North Carolina on April 26, 1876. The couple had two children: Walter Lawrence Reed (born 1877) and Emily Lawrence Reed (born 1883). While stationed at frontier military camps, they also adopted a Native American girl named Susie.
Career and Achievements
Seeking greater professional influence and financial security to support his family, Reed joined the U.S. Army Medical Corps in 1875 after passing a thirty-hour examination. Over the next sixteen years, the Army assigned him to various western outposts where he served American military personnel, their dependents, and Native American tribes, including several hundred Apaches under Geronimo’s leadership. During these postings, Reed grew concerned about epidemic devastation and sanitary conditions. He completed advanced coursework in pathology and bacteriology at Johns Hopkins University Hospital Pathology Laboratory during one of his later tours.
While stationed at Fort Robinson, Nebraska, Reed treated Jules Sandoz, a Swiss immigrant whose ankle was broken in a well accident. Despite recommending amputation, Reed honored Sandoz’s refusal of the procedure and successfully saved the foot through extensive treatment. In 1893, Reed joined the faculty of George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences and the newly opened Army Medical School in Washington, D.C., as professor of Bacteriology and Clinical Microscopy. He also served as curator of the Army Medical Museum, later known as the National Museum of Health and Medicine. These positions allowed him to pursue serious medical research and escape the periphery of the medical world.
In 1896, Reed first gained distinction as a medical investigator. He proved that yellow fever among enlisted men near the Potomac River was not caused by drinking the river water. Instead, he discovered that affected soldiers had used trails through local swampy woods at night, while officers without yellow fever did not. He also showed that local civilians drinking from the Potomac River had no connection to disease incidence.
Reed traveled to Cuba during the Spanish–American War to study diseases in U.S. Army encampments. In 1898, he chaired a panel investigating a typhoid fever epidemic and demonstrated that contact with fecal matter and food or drink contaminated by flies caused the outbreak. Yellow fever also ravaged Army troops in Cuba during this period.
Notable Events and Milestones
In May 1900, Major Reed returned to Cuba as head of an investigative board appointed by Army Surgeon General George Miller Sternberg to study tropical diseases, particularly yellow fever. Under Reed’s leadership of the U.S. Army Yellow Fever Commission, the board conducted experiments at Camp Lazear that demonstrated mosquitoes transmitted yellow fever and disproved the prevailing belief that fomites—clothing and bedding soiled by body fluids and excrement of victims—spread the disease. In 1901, Reed’s team confirmed the theory originally proposed by Cuban-American physician Carlos Finlay, establishing that a particular mosquito species was the vector for yellow fever transmission.
This breakthrough gave impetus to epidemiology and biomedicine as distinct scientific fields and most immediately enabled the United States to resume and complete work on the Panama Canal between 1904 and 1914.
