Vice-President Calls for Innovative Research in India
In a recent address at the Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) Research and Development (R&D) Award Ceremony in Bengaluru, Vice-President Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar emphasized the urgent need for authentic and practical research in India. He highlighted the importance of research that not only contributes to academic knowledge but also brings about real-world changes. His remarks come at a time when India is striving to enhance its global standing in technology and innovation.
The Need for Authentic Research
During his speech, Vice-President Dhankhar stressed that research must be authentic and cutting-edge. He pointed out that India’s contribution to global patents is lacking and called for a shift in focus. “Research must change the ground reality,” he stated, underscoring that superficial studies are not enough. He urged researchers to produce work that correlates with the changes they wish to see in society.
Dhankhar criticized the tendency to produce research papers that are quickly forgotten after presentation. He emphasized that genuine research should have lasting significance and impact. “We cannot rest our laurels on our past achievements,” he said, indicating that the nation is in an expectation mode and requires more from its researchers. The Vice-President’s call for high standards in research is a reminder that innovation must be meaningful and applicable to real-world challenges.
Leading the Semiconductor Revolution
In his address, Dhankhar called upon BEL to take the lead in the semiconductor revolution. He urged the organization to transition from design to manufacturing, emphasizing the need for innovation in this critical sector. “Think about it, brainstorm, scratch your brains,” he encouraged, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
He also mentioned the importance of nurturing domestic startups and indigenous component development. The Vice-President pointed out that there are many startups in need of support and guidance. He urged BEL to identify these startups and provide the necessary hand-holding to help them thrive. This initiative is crucial for establishing India’s position in global supply chains and fostering a robust ecosystem for innovation.
The Role of Education in Fostering Innovation
Vice-President Dhankhar also addressed the importance of promoting a spirit of innovation among young people. He noted that while India has immense talent, many young individuals are still unaware of the opportunities available to them. “They engage in long queues for government jobs,” he lamented, suggesting that the focus should shift towards innovation and entrepreneurship.
He praised the National Education Policy for moving away from a degree-centric approach to a more skill-oriented education system. However, he stressed that igniting the spirit of innovation must begin in schools and colleges. “That must be inflamed…in school and colleges,” he asserted, highlighting the need for educational institutions to foster creativity and research among students.
