Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Set to Launch
Indian Railways is set to launch its first Vande Bharat sleeper train in the coming weeks, promising a faster and more comfortable travel experience for long-distance passengers. The new prototype, designed to enhance travel compared to the existing Rajdhani Express, aims to cater to the growing demand for sleeper services. Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that plans for these sleeper trains are underway, with a total of 10 train sets expected to be operational by the end of the financial year.

The inaugural Vande Bharat Sleeper service is anticipated to begin from Delhi, connecting major destinations approximately 1,000 kilometers away. Potential routes include Ahmedabad, Bhopal, and Patna, with a stop in Varanasi. Indian Railways officials have emphasized the importance of improving train availability on high-demand routes. A final decision on the specific routes will be made shortly, reflecting the strategic planning behind this new service aimed at enhancing connectivity across the region.
Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains: Features, Speed & More
The Vande Bharat sleeper trains will be equipped with advanced features and specifications. They are designed to reach maximum speeds of 180 km per hour, with operational speeds of 160 km per hour. The prototype includes 16 passenger coaches, featuring 11 AC 3-tier coaches, 4 AC 2-tier coaches, and one AC First Class coach. Notable amenities include specialized night illumination, integrated announcements with visual displays, and CCTV surveillance for enhanced safety.
Inspired by European rail systems, the sleeper trains will offer improved comfort with well-equipped coaches and cushioned berths. Accessibility features, such as modern bio-vacuum toilets and facilities for disabled passengers, are also included. The AC First Class coach will provide shower facilities with hot water. Additionally, the trains will utilize the indigenous KAVACH anti-collision system and regenerative braking technology for energy efficiency. Each coach will have individual reading lights, charging points, and automatic interconnecting doors, ensuring a comfortable and convenient travel experience.
Current Status and Future Plans
Currently, Indian Railways operates 150 chair car variant Vande Bharat train services across the country, which are designed for daytime travel. The introduction of sleeper variants is expected to significantly enhance passenger comfort during night journeys. The occupancy rates for Vande Bharat Express trains have been impressive, reaching over 102% in the 2024-25 fiscal year and exceeding 105% in the first quarter of the current fiscal year.
In addition to the sleeper trains, Indian Railways plans to produce approximately 17,000 general and non-air-conditioned coaches over the next five years. Minister Vaishnaw highlighted the recent increase in the number of general class coaches, indicating a commitment to improving overall rail services in India. The rollout of the Vande Bharat sleeper trains marks a significant step forward in modernizing the Indian railway system and meeting the evolving needs of passengers.
