Update on Day Care Cancer Centres

For the financial year 2025-26, the Indian government has approved the establishment of over 200 Day Care Cancer Centres (DCCCs) nationwide. This initiative aims to enhance cancer care accessibility, particularly in high-burden districts. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has outlined plans for these centres, which will be set up primarily in district hospitals, with funding sourced from the National Health Mission.
Establishment of Day Care Cancer Centres
The governmentโs initiative to establish Day Care Cancer Centres (DCCCs) is a significant step towards improving cancer treatment facilities across India. The DCCCs will primarily be located in district hospitals, depending on the availability of space and logistical considerations. However, the government has also indicated that these centres could be established in other government health facilities if deemed feasible based on state proposals. The estimated cost for setting up each DCCC can reach up to Rs. 1.49 crores, depending on the specific requirements and existing gaps in the healthcare infrastructure at the chosen facility. Funding for these centres will be provided through the State Resource Envelope of the National Health Mission, with allocations made according to established norms.
Prioritization Based on National Gap Analysis
To ensure the effective establishment of DCCCs, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare conducted a national gap analysis utilizing data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) cancer registry. This analysis helped identify high-burden districts where cancer care is critically needed. Following this assessment, states and Union Territories submitted proposals for the establishment of DCCCs, which were subsequently reviewed and finalized by the National Programme Coordination Committee (NPCC). This strategic approach aims to optimize resources and minimize duplication of services, ensuring that cancer care is accessible to those who need it most.
Implementation Timeline and Future Plans
According to the announcement made in the Union Budget for 2025-26, the government plans to roll out the establishment of Day Care Cancer Centres over the next three years. This timeline reflects the urgency of addressing cancer care needs across the country, particularly in regions that have been identified as having a high burden of cancer cases. The initiative is expected to significantly enhance the capacity for cancer treatment and support services, ultimately improving patient outcomes and quality of life for those affected by cancer.
List of Approved DCCCs by State
The approved list of Day Care Cancer Centres includes various states and Union Territories, each with specific locations designated for the establishment of these centres. For instance, Bihar will see DCCCs in districts such as Saran, Vaishali, and Madhubani, while Andhra Pradesh will have centres in Anantapur, Kurnool, and Prakasam, among others. Other states like Karnataka, Rajasthan, and Punjab have also been allocated multiple locations for DCCC establishment. This comprehensive approach ensures that cancer care services are distributed across the country, addressing regional disparities in healthcare access.
