Upcoming Winter Session of Parliament 2024

The Indian Parliament is gearing up for its Winter Session, scheduled to commence on November 25, 2024. A crucial meeting was held today, chaired by Union Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh, with the floor leaders of all political parties. This meeting aimed to discuss the agenda and legislative business for the upcoming session. The Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Shri Kiren Rijiju, welcomed the leaders and outlined the session’s framework, which will span 26 days and include 19 sittings.

Legislative Agenda for the Winter Session

During the meeting, Shri Kiren Rijiju highlighted that the Winter Session will focus on significant legislative business. A total of 16 items of legislative business and one item of financial business have been tentatively identified for discussion. This session is particularly important as it will address various pressing issues and legislative needs of the country. The government aims to ensure that all discussions are conducted smoothly, with active cooperation from all political parties.

The Union Minister emphasized the government’s readiness to engage in discussions on any issues raised by party leaders, as long as they adhere to the rules of procedure set by the respective presiding officers. This approach aims to foster a collaborative environment in Parliament, allowing for constructive debates and effective governance.

Celebration of Constitution Day

A significant highlight of the Winter Session will be the celebration of Constitution Day on November 26, 2024. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of India. The government has planned various activities to commemorate this milestone, including a main function at the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan in New Delhi. The event will be attended by the President, Vice President, Prime Minister, and other dignitaries.

Shri Rijiju announced that the function would be live-streamed across various TV channels, ensuring widespread participation. The tagline for the yearlong celebrations will be โ€œHumara Samvidhan, Humara Swabhiman.โ€ The event will commence with the National Anthem, followed by speeches from key leaders, including the Vice President and the President of India.

Engaging the Public in Commemoration Activities

The government is keen to involve citizens in the celebrations of Constitution Day and the yearlong activities that will follow. Various initiatives will be launched to encourage public participation, including mass readings of the Preamble of the Constitution. The Minister for Parliamentary Affairs called upon all Indians to join in this collective reading, emphasizing the importance of understanding and appreciating the Constitution’s values.

Additionally, special programs will be organized at the state level, led by Governors and Chief Ministers, to promote awareness about the Constitution. The commemoration events aim to reiterate the core values enshrined in the Constitution and motivate citizens to actively participate in strengthening democracy.

Conclusion of the Meeting

Concluding the meeting, Shri Rajnath Singh expressed gratitude to all leaders for their contributions and concerns raised during the discussions. He assured them that the government is open to addressing these issues, provided they align with the rules of the respective Houses. The meeting saw participation from 42 leaders representing 30 political parties, highlighting the collaborative spirit among various political factions.

As the Winter Session approaches, the government is optimistic about the productive discussions that lie ahead, focusing on legislative needs and the celebration of India’s constitutional heritage.
