Union Minister Reviews Chandigarh’s Progress in Swachh Bharat Mission
In a significant review meeting held at the UT Guest House in Chandigarh, Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs and Power, Shri Manohar Lal, evaluated the advancements in the Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban (SBM-U). The session, which took place recently, included key figures from the Chandigarh administration, such as Home Secretary Mandip Singh Brar, Municipal Corporation Commissioner Amit Kumar, and several senior officials from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
During the meeting, Shri Manohar Lal emphasized the urgent need to accelerate the construction of Aspiration Toilets. He stressed that existing toilet facilities should be regularly monitored and maintained to ensure they remain functional and accessible to the public at all times.
Focus on Citizen Engagement and Cleanliness
The Minister also discussed preparations for the approaching 15-day campaign, “Swachhata Hi Seva 2026,” calling for active citizen engagement in every initiative during this period. He remarked that individuals are the true guardians of cleanliness and their feedback should be taken seriously and acted upon. He likened the idea of cleanliness to the preparations made before the Diwali festival, insisting that all waste collection vehicles, government offices, and processing facilities should reflect a renewed commitment to hygiene.
Leveraging Technology for Urban Development
Shri Manohar Lal highlighted the importance of cross-learning initiatives among Urban Local Bodies. He pointed out successful practices from Integrated Command and Control Centres where artificial intelligence and digital tools are employed to track vehicles and gather real-time data, thus creating smart urban solutions. He proposed the establishment of a structured city-to-city learning mechanism, enabling various cities to share knowledge, processes, and innovative strategies.
Commitment to Sustaining Cleanliness
Pleased with the progress Chandigarh has made under SBM-U 2.0, the Minister reiterated that the mission’s success is not just about achieving cleanliness but also about maintaining and continuously enhancing it. The meeting served as a reminder of the government’s commitment to developing sustainable urban environments through collective efforts and innovative solutions.
