Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh Advocates for Collaborative Efforts for Pradhan

An important event, the “Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture Meet 2025,” took place on June 13, 2025, in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Organized by the Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, the meeting was chaired by Union Minister Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh. The event brought together various dignitaries, including state ministers and officials, to discuss the progress and future of the fisheries sector in India, emphasizing the need for enhanced production, infrastructure, and sustainable practices.

During the meeting, Union Minister Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh acknowledged the significant advancements made by inland states in the fisheries sector. He pointed out that the sector has achieved an impressive average annual growth rate of 9%, the highest among all agri-allied sectors, benefiting nearly 30 million people. The Minister highlighted several key initiatives, including the Blue Revolution and the Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF), which have collectively infused โ‚น38,572 crore into the sector. These efforts have propelled India to become the worldโ€™s second-largest fish producer, with inland fish production increasing by 142% since 2013-14. Singh urged states to optimize the use of FIDF and enhance exports by focusing on coldwater fisheries, ornamental fisheries, and saline aquaculture, thereby contributing to the vision of a developed India.

Focus on Technology and Innovation

Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel, Minister of State, emphasized the critical role of fisheries in doubling farmers’ incomes. He called for regular monitoring, improved productivity, and the adoption of advanced technologies. The potential of Amrit Sarovar for Rohu and Catla farming was highlighted, along with the necessity of strengthening cold storage and market linkages to balance supply and demand. Additionally, he encouraged support for over 300 fisheries start-ups that are innovating in digital tools, value addition, and post-harvest activities. The integration of technology is seen as essential for enhancing productivity and ensuring the sustainability of the fisheries sector.

Strategies for Sustainable Growth

Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi, Secretary of the Department of Fisheries, outlined the need for quality seed availability and the establishment of brood banks with the support of ICAR. He set ambitious goals to expand the culture area from 55 to 70 lakh hectares and double productivity from 5 to 10 tonnes per hectare. The potential for exporting saline aquaculture products, ornamental fish, trout, and shrimp was also discussed. Likhi stressed the importance of a cluster-based approach that encompasses the entire value chain, from seed to market, and highlighted the need for training and capacity building among traditional farmers. The meeting underscored the importance of scaling up technology infusion through systems like RAS and Biofloc to achieve sustainable growth.

Collaborative Efforts and Future Directions

The meeting served as a crucial platform for fisheries ministers from various inland states and union territories to share their resources, achievements, and ongoing initiatives. Discussions focused on overcoming challenges, enhancing production, and improving infrastructure through better utilization of central schemes. There was a strong call for customizing schemes to meet regional needs, increasing support for cold storage and shrimp farming, and adopting innovative technologies such as drone-based monitoring. The collective aim was to align state efforts with national priorities to enhance livelihoods, boost exports, and promote sustainable inland fisheries. The event concluded with a commitment to advancing governance, infrastructure, and market connectivity, ensuring long-term growth and productivity in the inland fisheries sector.
