Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah, recently engaged with women from the cooperative sectors of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan during a ‘Sahkar Samvad’ event in Ahmedabad. This initiative is part of the programs organized for the International Year of Cooperatives 2025. Shah highlighted the establishment of the “Tribhuvan” Sahkari University, aimed at training young professionals in the cooperative sector, and emphasized the significant contributions of Tribhuvandas Patel, a key figure in the cooperative movement. He also discussed upcoming changes in the dairy sector and the importance of cooperative institutions in enhancing the livelihoods of farmers and women involved in these sectors.
Tribhuvan Sahkari University: A Tribute to Tribhuvandas Patel
During the ‘Sahkar Samvad’, Amit Shah announced the laying of the foundation stone for the “Tribhuvan” Sahkari University in Anand district. This institution is named after Tribhuvandas Patel, who played a pivotal role in establishing the cooperative movement in India. Shah noted that Patel’s vision was to prepare young professionals for the cooperative sector, a mission that the university aims to fulfill. He pointed out that Patel’s contributions have empowered 36 lakh women in Gujarat, generating business worth โน80,000 crores. Despite some opposition, Shah affirmed the decision to honor Patel, emphasizing the importance of recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions without seeking personal fame.
Transforming the Dairy Sector
Amit Shah outlined the government’s plans to revolutionize the dairy sector by focusing on cow dung management, animal health, and food management. He mentioned that cooperative dairies will soon implement measures to increase income through innovative uses of cow dung, including the production of organic manure and gas. Shah expressed his vision for cooperative dairies to engage a majority of families involved in milk production, ensuring that essential services like vaccination and waste management are handled cooperatively. He urged local milk-producing mandis to display images of Tribhuvandas Patel to educate the community about his contributions to the cooperative movement.
Enhancing Services through PACS
Shah discussed the integration of Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) with various services, including Common Service Centers (CSC) and Micro ATMs. He highlighted the training provided to inspectors of District Cooperative Banks to facilitate these changes. Shah emphasized the need for PACS to generate revenue and create awareness about affordable medicines available at Jan Aushadhi Kendras. He encouraged PACS members to engage with inspectors to understand the new amendments and leverage these services for community benefit.
Promoting Natural Farming and Camel Milk Research
In his address, Amit Shah advocated for natural farming practices, which he believes can significantly benefit health and agricultural productivity. He shared his personal experience of adopting natural farming, resulting in a substantial increase in crop yield. The Cooperative Ministry is also establishing a national cooperative institution to support the purchase of grains produced through natural farming. Additionally, Shah announced a collaborative initiative between the Rajasthan and Gujarat governments to explore the medicinal properties of camel milk, aiming to enhance the economic viability of camel rearing and improve prices for camel milk producers. This initiative is expected to contribute to the conservation of camel breeds while benefiting local farmers.
