Union Food and Consumer Affairs Minister to Grant Drone Certifications Recommended by National Test House

Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and New & Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi, is set to award drone type certifications approved by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) during a ceremony on September 10, 2025, in New Delhi. This event marks a significant milestone in the Certification Scheme for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), as the National Test House (NTH) in Ghaziabad has been provisionally recognized by the Quality Council of India (QCI) as a certification body for drones. The initiative aligns with the Government of Indiaโ€™s vision under the Drone Rules 2021, aimed at developing a safe and competitive drone ecosystem.

Certification Process and Achievements

The National Test House (NTH) has already processed over 50 applications from Indian drone manufacturers seeking type certification for their models. Following a thorough evaluation process, two drone models have successfully received Type Certification from the DGCA. This achievement highlights NTH’s dedication to enhancing safety, reliability, and quality standards within India’s burgeoning drone industry. The certification process is designed to ensure that drones meet stringent safety and performance criteria, fostering consumer trust and encouraging innovation in the sector.

Affordable Certification Services

NTH is offering drone certification services at a competitive fee of โ‚น4.2 lakh, which is the lowest in the industry. This pricing strategy reflects NTH’s commitment to supporting the growth of India’s drone sector by making certification accessible to manufacturers. By providing certification from a reputable government body, NTH empowers Indian drone manufacturers to market their products with increased confidence, both in domestic and international markets. This initiative is expected to stimulate innovation and drive the expansion of the drone industry in India.

Legacy and Future Contributions

Established in 1912, the National Test House has a long-standing history of contributing to India’s industrial growth through testing, calibration, and quality evaluation across various sectors, including engineering, textiles, electrical, and food sciences. With its recent foray into drone certification, NTH not only broadens its service offerings but also plays a vital role in supporting government initiatives such as “Make in India” and “Aatmanirbhar Bharat.” As NTH celebrates 114 years of service, its commitment to quality, safety, and innovation remains steadfast, positioning the institution as a key player in India’s evolving technological landscape.
