In a significant step towards enhancing urban connectivity, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Thane Integral Ring Metro Rail Project corridor in Maharashtra. The project, which spans 29 kilometers along the periphery of the west side of Thane city, will feature 22 strategically located stations. This corridor, flanked by the Ulhas River on one side and the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) on the other, is designed to provide a sustainable and efficient mode of transportation for the rapidly growing city.

The Thane Integral Ring Metro is expected to ease traffic congestion on the city’s roads, enabling Thane to better realize its economic potential. By offering a reliable and eco-friendly transportation option, the project will also contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with broader environmental goals.

With an estimated cost of ₹12,200.10 crore, the project will be jointly funded by the Government of India and the Government of Maharashtra, with additional financial support from bilateral agencies. Innovative financing methods, including the sale of station naming rights, asset monetization, and Value Capture Financing, will be employed to raise the necessary funds.

The metro corridor is designed to connect major business hubs, providing an effective transportation solution for a large section of the workforce. The project is expected to be completed by 2029, offering faster and more economical transport options for thousands of daily commuters, particularly students and office-goers. Upon completion, the metro is projected to serve a daily ridership of 6.47 lakh passengers in 2029, increasing to 7.61 lakh in 2035, and 8.72 lakh by 2045.

Maha Metro, the executing agency, has already initiated pre-bid activities and is in the process of preparing tender documents. The contracts will be floated for bidding shortly, marking the beginning of this transformative infrastructure project.
